Fresno State claims third place in GCC Championship

FRESNO, Calif. – The No. 4-seeded Fresno State water polo team upset No. 2 San Diego State 15-10 to clinch third place in the 2019 Golden Coast Conference Championship at the Fresno State Aquatics Center, Sunday afternoon. Daphne Guevremont led the Bulldogs with four goals, tying her career-high.
Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Richards was named to the GCC All-Tournament team. Richards finished the tournament with 28 saves in three games, averaging 9.33 saves per game. She recorded a career-high 12 saves in the Bulldogs' 15-10 win over the Aztecs to claim third place.
"Mackenzie earned the honor of all tournament team by her play throughout the conference tournament," said head coach Natalie Benson. "Her work in the cage gave us the opportunity to earn third place, and we are super proud of how far she was able to come in her short time here."
Fresno State, in its second season, finished the season with an overall record of 14-15 (4-3 GCC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State won the sprint to open the game. SDSU struck first, scoring within the first minute of the game to take a 1-0 lead. Claire Schade countered for the Bulldogs to knot the game 1-1, and Guevremont added another goal to take a 2-1 lead on a power play. Fresno State scored four more goals to finish the quarter on a 6-0 run, the Bulldogs finished the first eight minutes with a 6-1 lead.
The Bulldogs won their second consecutive sprint to start the second quarter. SDSU halted Fresno State's run with three consecutive goals, closing in on the Bulldogs lead 6-4. Guevremont stopped the run to extend the Bulldogs lead 7-4 with 1:20 left in the quarter. Fresno State and SDSU exchanged goals to end the quarter, the Bulldogs took an 8-5 lead into halftime.
SDSU won the sprint to start the third, but the Bulldogs kept the Aztecs scoreless on the opening possession. Schade made it a hat trick with a goal to secure a 9-5 lead with 5:32 left in the quarter. The Aztecs scored on a penalty shot, but Guevremont responded by logging her hat trick to give the Bulldogs a 10-6 lead with 1:52 remaining in the quarter. Richards made a huge save with 30 seconds left to solidify a 10-6 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Aztecs won the sprint to commence the final eight minutes. Callie Woodruff opened scoring to grab an 11-6 lead in the first minute if the quarter. SDSU and Fresno State exchanged goals, but the Aztecs were able to tack another on to make it a 12-8 game with 6:04 left in regulation. The teams would exchange goals two more times to finish the game. Madelynn Garcia subbed in and made back-to-back clutch saves to log a 15-10 victory for the Bulldogs.
