Bulldogs top Cal Poly 4-3

FRESNO, Calif. – Returning to Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center for the first time in three weeks, Fresno State grinded out a 4-3 victory over Cal Poly on Saturday afternoon in a near-four-hour dual match. The Bulldogs improved to 8-9 on the year while the Mustangs dropped to 6-9.

Saturday's win marked Fresno State's third straight win that resulted in a 4-3 score line. The 'Dogs moved to 4-0 in one-point wins on the season.
DOUBLES
Fresno State started strong in doubles play behind its No. 3 duo of Shir Azran and A.C. Hummel who posted a 6-1 win to give the 'Dogs the early edge. Cal Poly responded with a 6-3 win at No. 2 from Susanne Boyden and Grace Olyphant. With the No. 1 match knotted up at 5-5, Georgia Lawson and Jennifer Timotin claimed the next two games to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the dual.
SINGLES
Sliding up into the No. 4 spot for only the second time in the last six matches, Hummel was in cruise control against Caroline Williams as the Bulldog freshman improved to 9-1 in duals this year with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Timotin then fell at No. 1 to Emily Louie-Meadors, 6-4, 6-4, cut the road team's deficit to 2-1.

Lawson quickly answered for the Bulldogs, closing out her match on Court 6 to give the 'Dogs a 3-1 advantage. The junior defeated Claire Bouquet, 6-4, 6-4. The Mustangs closed the gap with a win at No. 3 as MacKenzie Worsnop won a second-set tiebreak to close out Ella Husrefovic, 6-3, 7-6.

With the dual coming down to Court 2 and Court 5, Deniza Marcinkevica was forced into a third set after dropping a second-set tiebreaker at No. 5, while Shir Azran, despite cramping late in the second, gutted her way into a third set with a 7-5 win in her first match this season in the No. 2 spot. Marcinkevica would clinch the dual for the Bulldogs behind a 7-5, 6-7, 6-4 win over Olyphant.

Fresno State will return to Wathen Tennis Center tomorrow at 11 a.m. PT as the Bulldogs host Long Beach State who heads into Fresno with a 12-4 record after defeating UC Davis 4-0 on Saturday.
