Bulldogs accept bid to NISC, will play in Reno regional starting Thursday

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Fresno State has accepted a bid to the postseason National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC) and will play in a regional this week with Nevada, Loyola Marymount, and UC Riverside with the Wolf Pack hosting in Reno. The field was announced Sunday night following the NCAA Tournament selection show.
The Bulldogs will be making their first appearance in the NISC, which is in its third year of existence. Fresno State will be making its 38th trip to the postseason overall with four AIAW Tournament berths and 33 selections to the NCAA Tournament.Â
Fresno State will open the regional vs. UC Riverside on Thursday at 1 p.m. with Nevada and Loyola Marymount meeting at 4 p.m.. The complete NISC field has 19 teams, with Iowa State (Ames, Iowa), Liberty (Lynchburg, Va.), and Stephen F. Austin (Nacogdoches, Texas) also serving as regional hosts.
The four regional winners will advance to the NISC championship round, which will take place May 24-26. The NISC Tournament organizer, Triple Crown Sports, will host the double-elimination championship round in Fort Collins, Colo.
The Bulldogs have already defeated all three of their regional NISC opponents earlier this season. The 'Dogs had a run-rule win over UC Riverside, 12-0 in six innings, on Feb. 17 in Los Angeles and beat Loyola Marymount, 4-1, in Fullerton on Feb. 28. In a three game home MW series against Nevada April 12-14, Fresno State won the first two games by 10-2 and 6-0 scores before the Wolf Pack took the series finale, 5-1, in eight innings.Â
LMU finished second in the West Coast Conference at 35-18 overall and 11-4 in league play. UC Riverside was sixth in the Big West with a 26-25 (8-13) record and Nevada placed seventh in the MW at 27-25 (11-13).
Loyola Marymount is the defending NISC champion. In 2018 the Lions won their regional round at Northern Colorado then hosted the championship, beating UC Riverside twice to take the title. Nevada has played in all three NISC Tournaments while UC Riverside will be making its second appearance.
