COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Freshman outfielder McKenzie Wilson was selected as the MW Freshman of the Year and earned an All-MW first team selection as the all-conference teams were announced on Wednesday.
Pitchers Danielle Lung and Hailey Dolcini, designated player Hayleigh Galvan, and third baseman Schuylar Broussard each received All-MW second team honors. Fresno State totaled five All-MW selections for the second consecutive year and has had at least four honorees in each of its seven seasons as a member of the conference. Selections are voted on by the conference coaches and reflect performance in MW conference games only.
Wilson is the first Bulldog ever named MW Freshman of the Year and is the first conference Freshman of the Year selection for Fresno State in 11 years, since Morgan Melloh was named WAC Freshman of the Year in 2008. Wilson beat out a strong group of MW freshmen in 2019 as five total freshmen earned All-MW first team honors and San Jose State freshman Janessa Ullegue was named MW Pitcher of the Year.
In MW games Wilson led the league with 14 stolen bases, fourth most in conference games in MW history, and led with three triples, was tied for second with 34 hits, and ranked sixth with a .400 batting average. She reached base in each of the last 20 Fresno State MW games and in 23 of 24 total conference games while ending the regular season with a 13-game hitting streak. She had a hit in 21 of 24 MW games.
Wilson also led the team with nine multi-hit games in conference play, including four three-hit games. She had a team-best .440 on-base percentage as well as 17 runs scored and was tied for second with 13 RBIs while striking out only four times in 85 official at-bats. She also played stellar defense with 41 putouts, two outfield assists, and just one error.
Galvan earned All-MW honors for the second time in as many seasons as a Bulldog after being named to the first team last year. She led the 'Dogs and was tied for fourth in the league with seven home runs in league play and also led the team with 19 RBIs and 43 total bases over 24 league games. She was third on the team hitting .323 in MW, led with a trio of three-RBI games, and tallied six multi-hit games. She was named MW Player of the Week twice during the conference season, as her go-ahead 3-run home run in the top of the seventh inning at UNLV gave the 'Dogs their first MW series win and she hit .556 with two home runs last week leading Fresno State to a sweep of Boise State.
Broussard earned her first All-MW selection. The junior led the team with a .720 slugging percentage in MW games and was second with a .340 batting average and five home runs. She also had four doubles as her nine total extra-base hits were a team high. Broussard was named MW Player of the Week on April 23 after hitting four home runs and driving in six runs in a three game Bulldog sweep at Utah State, and with a homer the following week she went deep five times over a seven game stretch. She had 35 assists and 26 putouts with just one error at third base and also led the league with five sacrifice bunts.
Lung led the Bulldogs with an 8-2 record, a 2.79 ERA, and a .226 opposing batting average in MW competition. The freshman was tied for second in the league in wins, was third in opposing batting average, and was seventh in ERA in league games. She allowed two earned runs or fewer in seven of her nine MW starts and pitched in a combined shutout at UNLV. Lung was named MW Pitcher of the Week on April 9 after she did not allow an earned run over 10.0 innings pitched while going 2-0 at UNLV. She had a streak of 22.0 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run during league play.
Dolcini earned All-MW honors in her first season as a Bulldog after being named All-Big West as a freshman at UC Riverside last year. She went 6-5 with a save and a 3.32 ERA in conference play, ranking third in the league with 56 strikeouts and tied for fifth in wins while walking just 22 over a team-high 63.1 innings pitched. She tossed three complete-game shutouts in conference games and earned three of her MW-leading five total Pitcher of the Week honors for her performance in league games. She was 6-3 with a 1.94 ERA as a starter in conference and her .256 opposing batting average was fifth best in the league.
