Fresno State (37-18) scored it most runs since the 2017 season and earned a run-rule win over UC Riverside (26-26) for the second time this year, having also defeated the Highlanders 12-0 in six innings in Los Angeles in February. The 'Dogs advanced in the winner's bracket and will play at 1 p.m. on Friday against regional host Nevada, which defeated Loyola Marymount, 4-3, in the second game on Thursday.
Freshman McKenzie Wilson had two stolen bases on Thursday to tie and then break the MW single-season stolen base record with 37 steals this year (watch). She also had two hits to extend her on-base streak and hitting streak to 23 games and 15 games, respectively.
Jennings was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and four runs scored, Vanessa Hernandez and Vanessa M. Hernandez each had two hits including a home run, and Schuylar Broussard homered and scored three runs to extend her reached-base streak to 22 games and is on a nine-game hitting streak. Danielle East earned the win, allowing just two hits and no runs over 2.1 innings in relief.
How it Happened
The Bulldogs sent 13 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored nine runs on just five hits along with three walks, a hit batter, and three UC Riverside errors in an inning that took 46 minutes to complete. UC Riverside got two runs on three hits in the top of the first but left two runners aboard.
The first six Bulldogs reached to start the bottom of the first, with Wilson singling and recording her first steal of the game to start things and Miranda Rohleder driving her in with an RBI triple (watch). A walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases and the 'Dogs scored twice on a Vanessa Hernandez single and an error. After UCR got the first out the 'Dogs added a run on a Jennings RBI single, scored three more runs on a pair of UCR errors, and their ninth run of the inning on a Hayleigh Galvan single.
The Highlanders quickly got three runs back in the top of the second as they began the inning with a hit batter, a walk, and a 3-run homer run from Emma Ramelot. The Bulldog response was even stronger in the bottom of the second as the senior Hernandez (watch) and Broussard (watch) opened with consecutive home runs. The freshman Hernandez would also homer in the inning, mashing a two-run shot to left (watch). Wilson followed with a single and her second steal of the game to break the MW season record (watch) but she would be left aboard.
In the top of the third, UC Riverside had its leadoff batter retired but the next three reached to load the bases and one run scored on a sacrifice fly. The Highlanders loaded the bases again after a single, scored on a bases loaded walk, then got two more runs on a single from Melanie Olmos. Danielle East entered and the Highlanders got a fifth run in the inning on a passed ball but two runners were left stranded.
The Bulldogs got four more runs in the bottom of the third, loading the bases with one out on a double, a walk, and a single. A fielding error by the UC Riverside second baseman permitted two runs to score and the freshman Hernandez followed with a single to center which also scored two runs, the second scoring on the sixth Highlander fielding error of the game.
Things settled down in the fourth inning as East faced just three batters in the top half, getting a double play to end the inning (watch), and the 'Dogs had a hitter reach on an error but nothing more in the bottom. East allowed just a single in the top of the fifth and with one out in the home half Jennings lineup an opposite-field home run inside the left field foul pole to end the game (watch).
Notable
- The temperature at first pitch was 52 degrees with 20 MPH wind, making it feel like 47 degrees.
- The game finished one run shy of the single-game NISC record of 29 combined runs.
- The 18 runs scored by the 'Dogs were the most in a game since scoring a program-record 24 runs against Stanford on Feb. 12, 2017.
- Four home runs were a season high for the Bulldogs, who had hit three homers in five games this year.
- Fresno State earned its 94th all-time postseason win in its first ever NISC game.
- UC Riverside committed seven errors in the game leading to seven unearned runs.
- Wilson broke the previous MW single-season record of 36 steals set by Utah's Molly McLean in 2001. She recorded her seventh game this season with multiple steals.
- Jennings homered for the second consecutive game for her first two home runs of the season. Three of her four career home runs have come in her last two games played in Reno, as she homered twice at Nevada in the final game of the 2018 season.
- In the first meeting this year between the 'Dogs and Highlanders, the senior Hernandez hit two home runs and the freshman hit one, so in two games again UC Riverside this season Bulldogs named Vanessa Hernandez have totaled five home runs.
Fresno State and Nevada will meet for the fourth time this year at 1 p.m. Thursday. The 'Dogs took 2-of-3 games against the Wolf Pack during their regular season series in Fresno. LMU and UC Riverside will meet in the first elimination game on Friday at 10 a.m., and the winner of that game will play the loser of the Fresno State-Nevada game at 4 p.m.
