‘Dogs outlasted by Aztecs, 1-0, in pitchers’ duel

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Bulldog freshman Danielle Lung and San Diego State junior Marissa Moreno matched zeros through the first six innings of the game but in the bottom of the 7^th Katie Byrd delivered a walk-off RBI double as the Aztecs earned a 1-0 win in the series opener on Friday night.

Moreno allowed just four hits and tallied eight strikeouts to lead San Diego State (22-24, 9-10 MW) to the win. Fresno State (33-16, 11-8 MW) saw its six-game MW winning streak snapped while getting shut out for just the sixth time all season. The 'Dogs got runners on base in six of seven innings but were held to 1-for-13 hitting with runners on, going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Lung allowed seven hits and had two strikeouts in a tough-luck loss. Schuylar Broussard continued her hot hitting for the Bulldogs with a pair of doubles and McKenzie Wilson had a single and a walk and recorded her 32^nd stolen base of the season, moving just two steals shy of matching the single-season program record.

How it Happened
Wilson reached to begin the game with an infield single, stole second, moved to third on a fly out, but was stranded. The Aztecs got a one-out double in bottom of the first and got the runner to third with still just one out but Lung pitched out of the jam as Rachel Minogue made a nice catch in foul territory to end the inning (watch).

Broussard had a double in the second giving Fresno State runners on second and third but SDSU center fielder Kiera Wright made a diving catch to end the inning. The 'Dogs left a runner on second in the third and the Aztecs did the same in the fourth. With a runner on first and one out in the bottom of the fifth, Wilson came charging in from right to make a catch on a flair and doubled off the runner at first to end the inning (watch).

Fresno State got a single and a walk with one out in the top of the sixth but could not advance the runners. In the bottom of the sixth, San Diego State loaded the bases with two out on two singles and a walk but Lung got a fly out to keep the game scoreless (watch).

Broussard led off the seventh with her second double of the game and moved to third on a sacrifice, but Moreno got a pop out and ground out to strand the runner. San Diego State got a one out single from Kristen Parker in the bottom half and, with two out, she scored from second on Byrd's double.

Notable

Fresno State was 22-0 this season when allowing two or fewer runs.
Wilson has now reached base in 17 consecutive games and is on a nine-game hitting streak.
Wilson's 32 stolen bases this season are the third most by a Bulldog in program history and just two shy of the single season record of 34, set by Brenna Moss in 2013 and matched in 2014.
Broussard has reached base in 16 consecutive games, hitting .405 with five homers and four doubles during the stretch.
Lung's season ERA dropped to 2.99 and she now has a 2.81 ERA and 7-2 record in MW games.
Kelcey Carrasco threw out her 8th attempted base stealer this season (watch).
The Bulldogs lost for just the fifth time in the last 23 games.
The 'Dogs had won five straight road games.
