Aztecs edge Bulldogs in game two, 3-1

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Danielle East did not allow an earned run over six innings pitched and Rachel Minogue had a solo home run but San Diego State capitalized on two Bulldog errors with three unearned runs in a 3-1 win on Saturday night.
Making her first start since April 7, East allowed just five singles and one walk and had four strikeouts. Minogue hit her fourth home run of the season to bring the 'Dogs even from an early 1-0 deficit but the Aztecs capitalized on a fielding error and a failed fielder's choice and scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead. Â Â
San Diego State (23-24, 10-10 MW) clinched the series win with its second consecutive strong pitching performance as Alicia Garcia allowed just four hits and one run over 6.1 innings. For Fresno State (33-17, 11-9 MW) McKenzie Wilson had a single and her MW-leading 33rd stolen base of the year, moving just one steal shy of matching the single season program record.Â
How it HappenedÂ
Just as she did in the series opener on Friday, Wilson began Saturday's game with a leadoff single and promptly stole second but was left on base. San Diego State got a pair of singles in the bottom of the first and, with two out, scored the game's first run on a Bulldog fielding error.Â
Fresno State had just one base runner over the next two innings, but in the fourth Minogue hammered an 0-1 pitch down the right field line to tie the game with her fourth home run of the season. Meanwhile, East retired the Aztecs in order in the second, fourth, and fifth innings while allowing just a walk in the third. In the fourth and fifth innings she retired all six batters she faced on just 13 total pitches.Â
Garcia retired the 'Dogs in order in the fifth and sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Shelby Thompson had a leadoff infield single, pinch runner Kayla Sok moved to second on a sacrifice, and reached third on a Bulldog fielding error. East got a ground ball but Sok beat the throw home on a failed fielder's choice to give SDSU the lead. The Aztecs scored a third run on a Kiera Wright RBI single but East got a strikeout and groundout to strand three runners.Â
Schuylar Broussard had a one-out walk in the top of the 7th to bring the tying run to the plate. SDSU brought in Marissa Moreno, who started Friday's series opener, and the junior got a foul out and strikeout to close the game.Â
