FRESNO, Calif. - For the last five seasons, a staple on Fresno State's bench at women's basketball games has been head coach Jaime White's former college coach, Tom Perkins who has served as the program's Director of Operations. That will change for the upcoming season as Perkins is set to retire at the end of this week.
Â
"Coach Perkins has always had a special place in my life," White said. "It's been a joy to have him on our staff. He has had a tremendous career due to the work ethic he possesses. He will be missed here at Fresno State."
Â
With Perkins on staff, the Bulldogs have won 99 games and made four postseason appearances. As a part of his job, he has been the staff's liaison with academic services. During the last four seasons, the program has seen its students qualify for the Mountain West All-Academic Team 31 times and be honored 25 times as MW Scholar-Athletes. The 'Dogs have also had at least one player selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team during each of the last four seasons.
Â
Prior to rejoining White at Fresno State, Perkins spent three seasons as the head girls' basketball coach at Wasatch High School in Herber City, Utah. That came a year after serving as an assistant coach for the 2010-11 season under his former player at Northern Colorado as the two helped lead the Bears to a Big Sky regular season championship and the school's first Division I postseason appearance.
Â
Prior to leaving college coaching in 1995 to coach his own children, Perkins was the head women's coach at Utah Valley State College from 1983-95 were he compiled an overall record of 278-48 (.851). While at UVSC, he won 10 ICAC conference championships, three Region 18 NJCAA championships and made three appearances in the NJCAA National Championship tournament.
Â
In all, 32 of Perkins' players garnered all-conference accolades under him at UVSC along with 18 all-region. Eight players, including White, were All-America selections. Perkins was named WBCA District 7 Coach of the Year in 1991 and the NJCAA Region 18 Coach of the Year three times. Additionally, Perkins was a four-time conference coach of the year. He was inducted into the Utah Valley University Hall of Fame in 2000 and into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame Foundation Coaches Hall of Honor in 2010.
