Ashford & Tatum selected on second day of 2019 MLB Draft

Fresno State Baseball seniors Zach Ashford and McCarthy Tatum were selected on day two of the 2019 MLB Draft.
FRESNO, Calif. - A pair of Diamond 'Dog seniors were selected on day two of the 2019 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday. Outfielder Zach Ashford was taken in the sixth round by the New York Mets while infielder McCarthy Tatum was selected in the 10th round by the Philadelphia Phillies.
Ashford and Tatum become the 30th & 31st student-athletes under head coach Mike Batesole to be selected in the first 10 rounds of the draft since the skipper became head coach of the Bulldogs in 2003.
A first-team All-Mountain West selection this season, Ashford ranked second in the MW and 29th nationally with a .381 average from the plate. The Clovis native, who finished his Bulldog career on Monday evening in the Stanford Regional final, led the MW with 67 runs scored and a .488 on-base percentage (23rd in the nation) while ranking second in hits (82) and third in walks (40).
Ashford appeared in 56 of the 'Dogs 57 games this spring making 54 starts and added 11 doubles, four triples and four home runs to go along with 21 RBI and a .526 slugging percentage. He led the team in stolen bases and had a stellar .989 fielding percentage only making one error in the field.
A four-year Bulldog, Ashford played in 214 games in his career, 10th-most in program history, and recorded a .347 average from the plate. Hitting over .300 in all four seasons, Ashford tallied 245 hits to finish with the ninth-most hits in a career.Â
Also a first-team All-Mountain West selection and the Tony Gwynn MW Co-Player of the Year, Tatum led the league with 84 hits and 77 RBI. Hitting .356 from the plate, fifth in the MW, Tatum started all 57 games for the Bulldogs this season as the 'Dogs won both the MW regular season and tournament championships.
The Clovis native led the league in slugging percentage (.606), home runs (13) & total bases (143), ranked fifth in doubles (16) and sixth in runs (54).
A five-year Bulldog, Tatum played in 139 games in his career making 107 starts. He tallied 124 hits, including 38 for extra-bases, scored 74 runs and drove in 91 RBI.
