SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Fresno State scored twice in the seventh inning to erase a one-run deficit and held on late to defeat Sacramento State, 2-1, on Tuesday night at John Smith Field.
How It Happened
In a tightly contested, low-scoring game, both teams were held in check early as Fresno State and Sacramento State combined for just four hits through the first three innings. The Hornets broke through in the fourth, using a double followed by an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.
Fresno State struggled to generate offense against Sacramento State's pitching staff, but the Bulldogs broke through in the seventh. After a leadoff walk by Jett Ruby, Marcus Nolen delivered the big swing with an RBI double down the left field line to tie the game. Later in the inning, Owen Faust reached on a Sacramento State error, allowing Nolen to score the go-ahead run, which proved to be the difference.
The Bulldogs' bullpen took over from there. BJ Rodriguez earned the win with two scoreless innings, while Will Page-Allen recorded the final five outs to secure the save. Sacramento State threatened in the eighth, loading the bases, but Page-Allen escaped the jam and closed the door in the ninth.
