How It Happened
Fresno State threatened early in the first inning after Owen Faust walked and Brady Hewitt was hit by a pitch, but Grand Canyon escaped the jam with a double play to keep the game scoreless.
The Lopes struck first in the third inning, taking advantage of an error before Griffin Cameron delivered an RBI double and Mito Perez followed with an RBI single to give Grand Canyon a 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs answered in the bottom half of the inning. Hewitt singled to spark the offense, and Sky Collins brought him home with an RBI double to left center. Later in the frame, Michael Boyd grounded out to drive in a run, tying the game at 2-2.
Grand Canyon regained control in the fifth with a pair of runs, highlighted by an RBI double from Camden Bates and an RBI single from Cameron to make it 4-2.
Fresno State chipped away in the sixth when Boyd doubled and Cam Schneider followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to one. The Bulldogs added another run in the seventh on a wild pitch, pulling even at 4-4.
The Lopes responded again in the eighth. After a hit-by-pitch and a stolen base, Tanner Johns delivered an RBI single to put Grand Canyon back in front 5-4.
Grand Canyon added insurance in the ninth on a solo home run from Billy Scaldeferri, extending the lead to three.
Fresno State made one last push in the bottom of the ninth. Griffen Sotomayor singled to start the inning, and Schneider delivered his second RBI single of the game to bring the Bulldogs within two. The tying run reached scoring position, but Grand Canyon was able to record the final out to secure the 7-5 victory.
