'Dogs edge Vikings, 2-1

BOISE, Idaho – The Fresno State women's soccer team defeated Portland State, 2-1 in a neutral site match at Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon.
Junior Emma Chivers scored her second goal of the season to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead at halftime. Portland State struck first in the second half to knot up the match. Kylie Lucero scored her first collegiate goal to seal in the victory for the Bulldogs.
Fresno State improves to 2-1-1 (0-0-0 MW) this season.
Tori Nicolo, Kasidee Wiley, Emma Chivers, Melissa Ellis, Robyn McCarthy, Lorena Montanes, Jordan Brown, Danielle Pacheco, Mariona Segales and Audrey Reyna chalked the start for the Bulldogs, with Milena Zink in goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Portland State opened the match firing on offense taking back-to-back shots, Zink was there to make the save to keep the Vikings off the board. Fresno State quickly responded when Chivers found the back of the net off a pass from Wiley in the 10th minute, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
Fresno State would hold off Portland State for the remainder of the half, taking a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
After 45 minutes, Fresno State and Portland State both took six shots. The Bulldogs took the only corner kick of the half. Zink managed to grab three saves in the goal.
McCarthy opened the second half with a shot on goal, but the Vikings goalie made the save. Portland State responded with a shot on goal of its own, but Zink recorded her fourth save of the match. Portland State regained possession after Fresno State was whistled for a foul, and capitalized with a goal to tie the match in the 63rd minute.
The Bulldogs rallied to retake the lead when Lucero scored off a pass from Montanes, making it a 2-1 match with 68 minutes remaining in regulation.
Fresno State played tough defense, only allowing Portland State to take one more shot before the clock ran out and the Vikings missed the goal wide, securing the 2-1 victory.
