FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State swimming and diving team has 14 new faces as it prepares for the 2019-20 season.
Â
The 'Dogs added 11 freshmen and three transfers after losing nine seniors following the 2018-19 season. This year's roster is nearly evenly split with 15 returners and 14 newcomers, comprised of 26 swimmers and three divers.
Â
One of the newcomers, junior Kingsburg native and Fresno Pacific transfer Morgan Coddington, made her Fresno State debut last weekend at the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) National Collegiate Open Water Championship. She placed 41st in a field of 76 competitors while returning junior Darina Khisiamova had a fourth-place finish for the 'Dogs.
Â
The two other new transfers for the Bulldogs enter as seniors, as Megan Bowen joins the team from Florida International and Anna Moers transferred from Georgia Southern for her final collegiate season.
Â
Bowen, originally from Okehampton, England, is one of three new Bulldogs from outside of the United States. Freshman Athena Clayson is also from England and freshman Eydis Osk Kolbeinsdottir joins the team from Njarðvík, Iceland, which is more than 4,000 miles away from Fresno. Clayson and Bowen both attended Mount Kelly School in the UK as did returning junior Emily Cutler.
Â
Madison DeRuyter is the lone diver among the 14 newcomers as she joins the team from Santiago HS in Corona. DeRuyter joins senior Irina Nikolaeva, a two-time All-MW honoree on 1-meter, and sophomore Yuliya Tykha as the team's diving group under coach Taryn Patrick.
Â
Alyssa Libang joins the program from Simi Valley after her older sister, Gabbie, concluded her outstanding Bulldog career last season. Marissa Johnson also enters from Simi Valley while Maya Gulvady and Sammie Keith come to the Bulldogs as freshmen after being teammates at Leland HS in San Jose.
Â
Valley native Megan Ridenour joins the Bulldogs after staring at Redwood HS in Visalia, San Luis Obispo native Annie Bartolome moves for the Central Coast to the Central Valley, Mackenzie Hutler joins the team from Chico, and Tyler Bedley comes up to Fresno from Lake Forest in Orange County.
Â
After Coddington and Khisiamova got their season's started last week the rest of the team will debut when the 'Dogs host Washington State, San Diego State, San Jose State, and New Mexico in the Chick-Fil-A Invitational Oct. 11-12 in the Fresno State Aquatics Center. Â
