Fresno State's A.C. Hummel and Georgia Lawson won their singles matches for the Bulldogs on Friday afternoon.
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's tennis team delivered a competitive effort, but ultimately dropped a result of 5-2 to the Cal Poly Mustangs on Friday afternoon at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
The Dogs did not go down without a fight as they showed resilience in doubles and singles play, before falling to the Mustangs in the end.
"The good news is that we have a chance to come back tomorrow and fix the things that weren't so great today," Fresno State head coach Mariana Cobra said. "I'm looking forward to seeing our team start out right in doubles and finish in singles."Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES –Â
Fresno State had a difficult time taking charge in doubles play, as the Mustangs claimed the first point by sweeping the two finished matches at the No. 3 and No.1 position by the scores of 6-3 and 7-5, respectively, with the No. 2 contest unfinished at 6-6 unfinished.
"I thought our energy was low of the beginning in doubles which lead us to lose the doubles point," Cobra said. "We picked it up towards the end but unfortunately we can't wait till the end to have good energy."
SINGLES -
The Mustangs went on to claim the four out of six singles points, while the Bulldogs took the last two in tough battles at the No. 2 and 3 positions.
Georgia Lawson and A.C. Hummel played well in singles and each won their individual competitions at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots to give the Bulldogs their only points of the day.
"Going into singles, some courts were competing from the start and others started off with low energy and obviously that put us in a deeper hole as Cal Poly took advantage of that opportunity," Cobra said. Â
Fresno State will next host the Pacific Tigers on Saturday at 12 p.m. PT.Â
