Mountain West announces 2020-21 basketball schedule
10/9/2020 11:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – It's only fitting that the 2020-21 Mountain West women's basketball season opens its conference schedule with same matchup that it ended with. With the release of the league's schedule on Friday morning, Fresno State will open with Boise State on New Year's Eve at the Save Mart Center.
The Bulldogs enter this season as the league's defending regular-season champions, finishing with a program-best 16-2 MW record and return the conference's reigning Player of the Year (Maddi Utti), Freshman of the Year (Haley Cavinder) and Coach of the Year (Jaime White). Fresno State opened last season's conference slate with 15 consecutive wins to wrap up its first MW regular-season title with three games to play.
Along with Utti and Cavinder, the Bulldogs welcome back the bulk their production from a season ago and added three transfers and two freshmen to bolster their depth.
With a change in scheduling format geared toward team travel, Fresno State will appear once on a Monday and a Tuesday, and three times on Thursdays. The 'Dogs will have six games on Wednesdays and seven on Saturdays.
Fresno State will open with three straight games at home, starting with the Broncos (Dec. 31), and close with back-to-back home games, ending with San Diego State (March 2). Only one other week sees the 'Dogs play consecutive home games (Jan. 21 and 23). League play will determine the seeding for the 2021 MW Women's Basketball Championship, which will be held March 7-10 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
With the scheduling changes this season, the Bulldogs' men's and women's team each have a home game on Feb. 6 (women: San Jose State; men: Colorado State).
The non-conference portion of the schedule will be released at a later date.
