FRESNO, Calif. - The anticipation around the wait of the Fresno State football team's future schedules can be put to rest as the program announced on Tuesday that it has completed its 2023 nonconference schedule.
Â
Following the 2020 campaign, the next four (2021-24) seasons have been filled out between Tuesday's announcement, the four additions announced on Mar. 20, and a bevy of contests unveiled on Feb. 27 that included four Power 5 teams locked in to visit Bulldog Stadium.
Â
The Bulldogs will open the 2023 nonconference slate at Purdue (Big Ten) on Sept. 2, then have a home game against Big Sky opponent Eastern Washington one week later on Sept. 9.
Â
Fresno State travels to Arizona State (Pac-12) on Sept. 16 and will wrap up nonconference play with a home game against BYU (Ind.) on Oct. 7.
Â
Tuesday's announcement highlights a new opponent addition of EWU (Sept. 9). The Oct. 7 contest against FBS Independent BYU was originally scheduled for Nov. 8, 2025 but was moved to 2023.
Â
Fresno State and Purdue are set to meet for the first time in 2023. Fresno State is 4-11 all-time against Big Ten opponents. The Bulldogs are only the third Mountain West school to meet with Purdue. Nevada won in come-from-behind fashion at Purdue a season ago, 43-41.
Â
The Bulldogs and Eastern Washington will also go head-to-head for the first time in program history. The Sept. 9, 2023 contest will be Fresno State's 18th game against an FCS opponent. The Bulldogs have two home dates scheduled against Cal Poly in 2021 and 2022 before facing EWU. Since 2000, Fresno State is 15-0 against its FCS opponents, and every game has been won at Bulldog Stadium.
Â
Fresno State is 91-38-4 all-time against the current 13 members of the Big Sky. The Bulldogs most recently defeated Sacramento State 34-20 at home last season.
Â
The 'Dogs and Sun Devils will play for the first time since facing each other in the 2018 Mitsubishi Motors Las Vegas Bowl. Fresno State defeated Arizona State for the first time in program history, 31-20, to close out a historic year for the Bulldogs.. The teams had met three times prior to the Las Vegas Bowl (1931, 1933, 1941).
Â
Fresno State is 27-45 all-time against current members of the Pac-12. The Bulldogs are 11-27 in true road games against their Pac-12 opponents. Before facing Arizona State in 2023, the Bulldogs have games also lined up with Oregon (2021), UCLA (2021), Oregon State (2022) and USC (2022).
Â
Of the 2023 nonconference opponents, BYU and Fresno State have the longest history together, once as conference foes. Fresno State leads the all-time series with the Cougars, 6-5. The last time the teams met was on Nov. 4, 2017 and the 'Dogs earned a crucial 20-13 home win to secure bowl eligibility for the first time since 2014. The Bulldogs are 4-2 against BYU at home.
