FRESNO, Calif. – With the opening of this year's early signing window on Wednesday, Fresno State head women's basketball coach Jaime White inked four newcomers for the 2021-22 season. The group includes Sydney Dethman from Montana, Tamia Stricklin from Washington, and Jessica Peterson and Angela Whitfield from California.
"We are very excited about the addition of these four young women to our program," White said. "They all possess great character, strong work ethic and substantial versatility. We look forward to their positive impact on the court, in the classroom and in the community in the coming years."
Sydney Dethman
6-2 | Forward
Froid, Mont. | Froid Medicine Lake HS
Dethman is a three-sport athlete (basketball, volleyball, track) who brings that versatility to the court. She is a three-time all-conference selection, was a first team all-defensive player in 2019 and was also featured on the all-state time in 2020. For her career, Dethman has averaged 15.1 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. She has shot at a 56-percent clip from the field and 39.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Montana native is also a two-time all-conference volleyball player.
Coach's Take… "Sydney is long, athletic and a great competitor. At 6-foot-2, she has the ability to stretch the defense with her 3-point shot and will be a mismatch because of her versatile skill set."
Jessica Peterson
6-2 | Center
Rancho Cucamonga, Calif | Etiwanda HS
Averaging 14 points and 11 rebounds per game last season for Etiwanda HS, Peterson earned three all-state selections in 2020, being tabbed first team All-CIF Open Division, second team Cal Hi Sports and second team All-CIF. She also earned first team All Baseline league honors and garnered two all-area selections in Inland Empire and earned first team honors at the Nike Battle of the Beach tournament. Averaging a double-double during the past two years, Peterson is ranked as the No. 8 player in Southern California in the Class of 2021.
Coach's Take… "Jessica is a strong and physical post presence with the ability to face and score off the dribble. She is best known for her ability to rebound and defend in the paint which will add much needed depth at the post position."
Tamia Stricklin
5-11 | Forward
Seattle, Wash. | Seattle Prep
Stricklin is a three-time All-Metro performer, receiving second team honors the past two seasons after averaging north of 12 points and five rebounds per game. Seattle Prep's Co-MVP during her sophomore and junior seasons, she sits eighth on the school's all-time scoring list with 926 career points. She also owns the program's single-season free throw record, shooting 77 percent from the line in 2019 as a sophomore.
Coach's Take… "Tamia is a talented lefty who is an exceptional 3-point shooter. She will be a great asset on both ends of the floor as she can play and guard multiple positions."
Angela Whitfield
5-10 | Guard
Fresno, Calif. | San Joaquin Memorial
Whitfield is the second SJM player to sign with the Bulldogs in the last three classes, joining former teammate Aunjona James who signed with Fresno State in 2018. Alongside her former teammate, Whitfield averaged 11.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists and 2.1 steals per game as the sophomore, as the two helped the Panthers to a Valley championship. Last year, the local product fought back from an offseason injury to win another Valley title. Whitfield has averaged 10.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game while being a key cog in the Panthers' run of 56 wins.
Coach's Take… "Angela is an exciting local talent. She has great IQ and court awareness with an ability to play make for herself and others. We are very happy she has decided to stay home in Fresno."
