After 10 months of not racing, the Bulldogs were back in the pool competing against San Diego State and San Jose State to open the 2020-21 season at the Fresno State Aquatics Center.
FRESNO, Calif. – With social distancing and other COVID-19 safety protocols in place, the Fresno State swimming and diving team hosted defending Mountain West champion San Diego State, along with San Jose State, for a two-day meet at the Aquatics Center.
"After 10 months of not racing, I was so proud of this team," Fresno State head coach Jeanne Fleck said. "They got up and raced. It was great. We swam almost as fast in this meet as our midseason form from a year ago. I was really pleased. Our team had fun and we really appreciated the opportunity to compete."
Fresno State won four races and one of the two diving events over the course of the action on Friday and Saturday.
The competition featured a pair of victories for sophomore Athena Clayson, who won the 100-yard and 200-yard backstrokes – the same two events she won during the 2020 MW championships.
Along with Clayson's two first-place finishes in backstroke, Fresno State's Darina Khisiamova won the 1650-yard freestyle and Tonya Guryeva sprinted to victory in the 100-yard freestyle.
"We swam well," Fleck added. "I am really proud of all three teams. Everyone was committed to social distancing and following the protocols, and we all did it well. The teams stayed in their areas and lanes. I was really happy."
Fresno State diver Yuliya Tykha won and earned a zone cut in the 1-meter diving event and placed second in the 3-meter diving contest.
