FRESNO, Calif. -- The Fresno State softball team opened the 2020 Fresno State Kickoff Invitational with two wins, defeating Cal Poly 13-1 and Fordham 8-4, on Friday night at Margie Wright Diamond. The Bulldogs had a breakthrough night at the plate, batting .388 while hitting seven triples in the two contests.Â
Against Cal Poly, Fresno State tied the program record for most triples in a single game with four, matching a mark the 'Dogs set against Rutgers in 2015. Freshman Alesia Denby showed power at the plate going 2-for-3 while recording a triple, two runs, and a team-high four RBIs. Against Fordham, Schuylar Broussard went 2-for-4 with a two-out triple and three RBIs. McKenzie Wilson was solid at the plate in both games for the 'Dogs going 4-for-5 on the night, scoring five runs, recording three RBIs, two triples and three stolen bases.Â
Fresno State (5-2) threw all four of their pitchers on the opening day of the invitational. Dariana Orme (1-0) started in the circle against Cal Poly. Orme pitched 4.0 innings and only allowed one run. Danielle East finished out the game for the Bulldogs, securing the victory. Hailey Dolcini (2-0) chalked the start against Fordham, and Danielle Lung would come in to record her first save of the season.Â
"We're playing well right now," head coach Linda Garza said. "We are seeing the ball and making the adjustments that we need to. We found ways to put runs together today. I enjoyed what I saw out there today. I thought both teams today did a good job of putting some pressure on us. They found ways to get on base and tested us. Defensively, there are some things we need to get better at. I'm looking forward to playing the rest of the weekend."Â
vs. Cal Poly - The Mustangs started the game strong with two singles, but the Bulldogs countered with tough defense to escape the inning without Cal Poly plating a run. Fresno State drew two walks in the bottom of the inning but would leave both runners on base, and the game would remain 0-0 after one inning. The Mustangs left two on base again in the second, putting two on the corners with one out, but Dolcini tossed a strike out and Schuylar Broussard closed the inning with a putout at second for back-to-back outs.Â
After one scoreless inning, Fresno State's offense would not be contained throughout the remainder of the game. It started with three runs in the second, six in the third and four more in the fourth.Â
In the second, Hailey Fuller hit a double to left field that led to the game's first run as Jennings advanced home following an error on the throw to third. With Fuller moving to third on the error, Denby grounded out on the next at-bat that scored Fuller to put Fresno State in front, 2-0. Wilson stepped up and hit a single and then quickly stole second. Freshman Kelsey Hall smashed an RBI two-out triple to right field, giving the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.Â
Cal Poly's only run came in the top of the third. A fielding error allowed the leadoff runner aboard which turned into the run. Lily Amos hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score the run.Â
Cal Poly made a pitching change to open the bottom of the third inning, but it did not prove to be the remedy to slowing the Bulldogs' offense down. Hayleigh Galvan drew a leadoff walk. Aaliyah Cuevas-Iniguez stepped in to pinch run and would use her speed to advance to third base on a ground out during the next at-bat. Miranda Rohleder hit a single to score Cuevas, and Jennings followed with another single for the Bulldogs. With runners on first base and third base, Denby hit a two-out single to left field scoring both runners. Once on base, Denby stole second base and advanced to third on a passed ball. Wilson and Hall kept the two-out rally going with back-to-back walks. Denby went home on a wild pitch. Broussard sent a shot to right field for a 2-RBI triple, triggering a second pitching change after all nine batters went to the plate. Fresno State grounded out on the next at bat, but the damage had been done, busting open the game with six runs on four hits, to take a 9-1 lead.Â
The momentum continued for Fresno State in the fourth inning as four more runs would score. Rohleder reached base on a fielding error, and stole second to get in scoring position. Jennings hit an RBI single, scoring Rohleder, and advanced to second on the throw to home. Vanessa Hernandez pinch-hit next, and blasted a triple to right field, scoring Jennings. Denby followed with the Bulldogs' fourth triple of the game, scoring another run. Christina Chavez made her Bulldog debut at the plate, earning a walk. Hall followed with an RBI single to score the 'Dogs last run of the game.
Fresno State scored 13 runs in three consecutive innings to take a 12-run lead into the fifth.Â
East entered the circle for the Bulldogs to finish the final inning. Fresno State sent the first three batters down in order to notch its first five-inning mercy rule of the season.Â
vs. Fordham -- The visitors struck first, opening the game with a 1-0 lead after the first. A leadoff walk manufactured the first run for Fordham. It could have been worse for the Bulldogs, but Dolcini dished two strikeouts to help close the inning and strand runners on second and third.
Fordham retired six consecutive Bulldogs batters before the home team heated up. Once Fordham went in front 3-1 in the top of the third, Fresno State's offense kicked in gear.
Fordham allowed the first two runners on in the third with a hit by pitch, and base on balls. Wilson singled to load the bases and Hall grounded out to push a run across next, closing the deficit to 3-1. Broussard was next to step in the box and she smoked a 2-RBI triple to center field, tying the game 3-3.
Fresno State would hold Fordham without a run for three straight innings, limiting the Rams to three hits in that span, while the Bulldogs mounted their comeback scoring five runs on six hits between the fifth and sixth innings.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Denby hit a leadoff single for her third hit of the night. Wilson kept the offensive spark going with a triple down the left field line, scoring Denby. Broussard logged the RBI with a ground out to send Wilson home. Fresno State drew back-to-back walks with two outs, the runners advanced to scoring positions on a wild pitch, but Fordham would dish the strikeout to end the inning.
Fresno State finished the game with another big inning at the plate. In the bottom of the sixth, Jennings hit a leadoff single and advanced to second on obstruction committed by the first baseman. Hernandez stepped up to the plate and recorded her first home run of the season, sending the ball over the center field fence to score two runs. Fordham changed pitchers to finish the inning. Wilson logged the third triple of the game, and scored the Bulldogs final run of the game off a wild pitch. Fresno State took an 8-3 lead into the final inning.
Lung walked the leadoff batter, and the runner advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Fordham hit a two-out single to score a run, but the rally would end there as Wilson made the catch in center field for the final out and Lung recorded the save.
