2/24/2020 4:40:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
FRESNO, Calif. -Â Fresno State sophomore attacker Sydney Skalstad was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Offensive Player of the Week after her dominant and record-breaking performance that led the Bulldogs to a 2-0 week last week. Skalstad netted 11 goals on 16 shots in two games last week.Â
Â
This marks Skalstad's sixth MPSF Player of the Week honor in her career, and first of the season.
Â
"We are thrilled with Sydney's recognition as she continues to display her dominance as an unstoppable scoring threat," said interim head coach Kara Concheck. "Her consistency and ability to finish under pressure have made her a huge asset for us. The best is yet to come for #54, and our team as a whole."
Â
At Winthrop on Feb. 17, Skalstad scored three goals and added six draw controls in the 17-12 road win. The win marked the first of the Bulldogs' season, and first under Concheck's lead.Â
Â
Skalstad's biggest game of the week came in Fresno State's home opener on Saturday as the 'Dogs hosted Stetson. She continued her scoring run by doubling her single game career-high and scoring eight goals. Her eight goals was the most in a game in the history of the program, and the most by any 'Dog since 2017. Skalstad led Fresno State to its third-most goals scored in a single game, and most goals scored at home, in its 21-13 win against Stetson.Â
Â
Skalstad's historic day ranked amongst the same in the MPSF as she was just one goal shy of the all-time conference record. Although short of the conference record, the Pasadena, Md. native scored the most goals in a single game by any member of the conference in seven years.Â
Â
The sophomore attacker is just one of five Division I women's lacrosse players in the nation to have scored eight goals in a game this season. She has scored 15 goals this season and ranks fourth in the NCAA in goals per game (5). Skalstad leads the team and conference in scoring and has chalked a hat trick or better in all three games this season. She currently sits at No. 14 in the NCAA in total goals this year, and she is third in the country in shots on goal per game (7.33).
Â
The Bulldogs (2-1 overall) return to action this weekend as they head to Tempe, Arizona to face Marquette in a neutral site battle on Feb. 29. The 'Dogs complete their trip to Arizona by going up against Pac-12 foe Arizona State on Mar. 2.Â
