FRESNO, Calif. -- During halftime of Saturday's basketball game, the Fresno State women's basketball program will honor Bulldog basketball legend Wendy Martell with a special jersey unveiling celebration.
Â
Previously retired, Martell's No. 34 jersey will now be displayed in the rafters at the Save Mart Center. She is the third female athlete to have her jersey number retired.
Â
"There is no one who has done more for the women's basketball program at Fresno State than Wendy Martell," said then-Fresno State head coach Bob Spencer, following the retirement of Martell's jersey. "We are elated that the administration saw fit to retire this outstanding student-athlete's number...During her career she was an inspiration to many girls in the area involved in athletics, and these are the kind of role models that our program and Fresno State as a whole aspires to attain."
The Bakersfield product wrapped up a spectacular Fresno State career in 1987 by shattering a total of 14 school records and earning PCAA Player of the Year, All-PCAA first team, Women's Basketball News Service All-America second team and American Women's Sports Federation All-America second-team honors. In addition, she was the first Fresno State women's basketball player to earn recognition on the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America Team, landing a third-team honor with a 3.7 grade point average as a physical education major.
Â
As a freshman, Martell became the first All-American in Fresno State women's basketball history by being selected to the AWSF Freshman All-America honorable mention squad. She followed that up in 1985-86 with AWSF All-America second-team plaudits.
Â
As a 5-foot-4 point guard, Martell, the 1986-87 Fresno State co-Female Athlete of the Year and team Most Valuable Player, led the Bulldogs to what was at the time the four winningest seasons in school history, including three consecutive 20-win seasons and a final 1986-87 record of 22-8.
Â
Martell currently ranks fifth on the program's career points list with 1,595, third in assists with 480 and fourth in steals with 224. She is also among the top-10 all-time in scoring average (13.8), field goals (632), field goals attempted (1,473), free throws (331), free throws attempted (423) and free throw percentage (.782).
