After a successful shortened season, Mariana Cobra has decided to resign as Fresno State’s head women’s tennis coach to move to Oklahoma and start a new challenge.
FRESNO, Calif. --- Mariana Cobra, who quickly sustained and then elevated the Fresno State women's tennis program since her arrival on campus last summer, has decided to resign as the Bulldogs' head coach, which will be effective on June 12, 2020.
Â
"After over 10 years of living and breathing for my passion of coaching, I have decided that 2019-2020 was my last season as a head coach," Cobra said. "Collegiate coaching has provided me many, many opportunities. Thank you to all of the players and colleagues, who have made me a better leader and person over the last few years.  Special thanks to Terry Tumey, Frank Pucher and the Fresno State Athletic family for the support and wonderful experience in my final year of my collegiate coaching."
Â
At Fresno State, Cobra, who is originally from Brazil, came to the San Joaquin Valley with successful Division I head coaching experience at North Florida (2016-19), Idaho (2014-16) and Northern Iowa (2012-13).
In 2020, the Bulldogs won seven matches, which included a thrilling 4-3 road win at BYU, in a shortened season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Â
"We thank Coach Cobra for bringing stability and positive momentum to our women's tennis program during her time on campus," Fresno State Director of Athletics Terry Tumey said. "Her efforts helped elevate Bulldog Tennis on the court, in the classroom, and in our community. We wish her the best as she moves on to the next chapter of her personal life."
Â
Over the course of her seven-year career as a Division I head coach, Cobra coached her players to 30 all-conference selections, including three conference Player of the Year awards and 2020 All-Mountain West Singles Team honoree A.C. Hummel.
Â
Georgia Lawson, a three-time All-MW honoree, also earned 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-District honors as one of many scholastic recognitions for a consistently high-achieving program in the classroom.
Â
In May, the Bulldogs' women's tennis team earned its sixth straight NCAA Public Recognition Award with a perfect multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 1,000. As a team, the Fresno State women's tennis program earned an impressive 3.88 combined team grade point average for the 2020 spring semester.Â
