LARAMIE, Wyo. – A put back at the buzzer from Jaye Johnson was all that separated Fresno State and Wyoming on Saturday afternoon at Arena-Auditorium as the Cowgirls handed the Bulldogs their second conference defeat, 65-63. Haley Cavinder led all scorers with a season-high 28 points.
Leading for nearly 34 minutes, the 'Dogs saw an 11-point advantage in the second quarter slowly slip away as Wyoming continued to chip into its deficit late in the second period and throughout the second half to keep the game close. The Cowgirls took their first lead of the contest with 4:34 remaining in the game during a 10-0 run that gave them a four-point lead.
Fresno State saw just three players score more than seven points in the game (Hanna Cavinder – 12, Aly Gamez – 10). Wyoming countered with a balanced offense as six players contributed at least six points, led by 16 points from Quinn Weidemann.
Key Stat
Wyoming outscored the Bulldogs 20-6 on second-chance points. Fifteen of those 20 points came in the second half. All seven of the Cowgirls' fourth-quarter second-chance points came during the final six minutes.
How It Happened
Fresno State opened the game on a 7-0 run behind Haley Cavinder who started the game 2-of-2 from field. Cavinder's 3-pointer was answered with two from Wyoming on back-to-back possessions. Fresno State held a 15-12 advantage though one and used an 8-2 spurt early in the second quarter to build its advantage to nine.
Leading by five midway through the period, a 3-pointer from Haley Cavinder was quickly followed by a steal from Yanina Todorova and an outlet to Gamez for a transition layup that gave the 'Dogs a 31-21 advantage. A 10-4 stretch to close the half for the Cowgirls kept the game close as the Bulldogs led 36-31 at the half.
A four-and-half minute drought midway through the third allowed Wyoming to remain close and eventually draw level at 44-44 with 90 seconds on the clock. The 'Dogs, though, answered back. A pair at the line from Gamez was followed by a stop. With the clock winding down, Haley Cavinder sank her third 3-pointer of the game to give Fresno State a 49-44 lead.
Maddi Utti extended the Bulldogs' advantage to seven on a put back with 9:05 remaining in the game. But from that point, Fresno State's offense sputtered, shooting just 1-of-7 and committing four turnovers during the next seven minutes which Wyoming take a 57-53 lead through a 10-0 run. With two minutes to play, the Cavinders teamed up to score five quick points, the second bucket being a 3-pointer by Hanna Cavinder in transition that put the 'Dogs up one, but Wyoming quickly answered with their 11th 3 of the afternoon. The Cowgirls then extended their advantage to three. With nine seconds to play Haley Cavinder appeared to have sent the game to overtime with a 3 from the left corner, but in the final seconds, a missed 3-pointer from Weidemann was caught and tossed in from Johnson as the clock expired.
