Bulldogs split series with Lobos behind 22-point rout in Texas

CANYON, Texas – In a game that was played within single digits throughout the first 30 minutes, Fresno State jumped on New Mexico in the fourth quarter with a 22-2 run to route the Lobos and split the series with a 91-69 win on Saturday afternoon First United Bank Center. The Bulldogs held UNM to just four points during the first seven minutes of the final period.
For the second game in a row, Fresno State sank 11 3-pointers, shooting 42.3 percent for the game (11-of-26), outscoring the Lobos by 12 from deep. Ten of the 11 came from Bree Delaney (4), Haley Cavinder (3) and Kendyll Kinzer (3).
Haley Cavinder registered game highs of 21 points, 14 rebounds and six assists, posting her third double-double of season. Delaney chipped in a season-high 19 points, shooting an efficient 7-of-8 from the field and 4-of-5 from 3. Hanna Cavinder (13) and Maddi Utti (12) joined them in double figures.
The Lobos were led Shaiquel McGruder and Jayden De La Cerda who had 14 points apiece.
Key Stat
While Fresno State committed 16 turnovers like it did Thursday, the Bulldogs forced six more on Saturday, turning a minus-four into a plus-seven in points off turnovers from Game 1 to Game 2.
How It Happened
The opening quarter looked like Thursday's contest with teams trading runs, both had five and seven-point spurts. The Bulldogs trailed by four with two minutes left but a 3-pointer from Delaney triggered a 7-0 stretch to put the 'Dogs up one after 10 minutes. Fresno State extended their lead to nine with under four minutes to play in the half following a 3-pointer from Kinzer and layup from Haley Cavinder. The Lobos scored seven of the final nine points to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 40-36.
Fresno State led throughout the third but New Mexico managed to keep the game close, pulling within one several times midway through the period. Three-pointers from Haley Cavinder and Delaney in the final minutes aided a 9-2 spurt for the 'Dogs as they took a 65-57 lead heading into the fourth. The Lobos scored the opening bucket of the quarter but Fresno State scored 22 of the next 24 points during the ensuing six minutes, holding the Lobos to 1-of-11 shooting and forcing three turnovers. The run gave the Bulldogs their largest lead of the game at 26, 87-61.

Fresno State will remain on the road next weekend, traveling to Logan, Utah. The two-game series with Utah State starts Thursday at 5 p.m. PT.

- The Bulldogs shot 42.3 percent from 3, their second straight game shooting over 40 percent. The 'Dogs have shot north of 40 percent in five of their eight conference games since the start of the New Year.
- Fresno State reached the 90-point mark for the fifth time this season.
- The 91 points is the most a Bulldog team has scored in 29 meetings with the Lobos.
- The Bulldogs held New Mexico below 21 percent from 3 for the second consecutive day. Fresno State has not allowed a team to shoot north of 21 percent in its last six games.
