Bulldog Bones
Not knowing what it would be like to play conference series in the new format, Fresno State and Colorado State were the guinea pigs, doing so in back-to-back days on Dec. 3 and 4. The two split the series with the Rams winning the opener 89-83 and the Bulldogs taking Game 2, 78-74. The two games mirrored one another, first with the Bulldogs leading for much of the first game before allowing a 12-0 run to flip the game in the fourth. CSU then led for much of the second game before a 12-2 run in the fourth quarter by the 'Dogs turned that game in their favor.
After the New Year, a trip to Wyoming led to similar results. Fresno State came out quick in Game 1 but Wyoming eventually won 65-63 at the buzzer. The Cowgirls were the aggressor early in Game 2 but efficient shooting kept the Bulldogs in the contest before winning 83-80 in overtime. The 'Dogs forced overtime by scoring 68 points during the final 31 minutes of regulation (2.19 points per minute). It was just the fourth win all-time in Laramie with all four coming under head coach Jaime White.
Running on premium gas
Averaging 81.4 points per game thus far, the Bulldogs' offense is scoring 5.3 points better than a year ago when they posted a second-highest season in program history (76.1). Playing solely against Division I opposition, Fresno State has put up at least 90 points in three of its first six games.
- Enter this season, Jaime White's teams have recorded at least 90 points in a game 6 times with three of those coming in 2019-20.
- Against its two West Coast Conference opponents (Saint Mary's, San Francisco), Fresno State posted back-to-back 90-point games. It was the first time a Fresno State team has done that since the opening of the 2005-06 season.
- Fresno State is shooting at a 46.2 percent clip, 35th nationally.
Twin 'Dogs
Throughout the early part of the season, the Bulldogs have been led in the scoring column by twins Haley Cavinder (20.8 ppg) and Hanna Cavinder (18.1 ppg) who rank first and third in the MW. The two have combined to score at least 38 points in six of the team's eight games, helping the 'Dogs to a 4-2 record in those contests. The two have combined to go for 40-plus on five occasions, and are 3-2 in such games.
- Fresno State is 0-2 when the duo scores below 35 points.
- Last time out, the duo scored 35 of its 42 points against Wyoming after the first 20 minutes.
Rising to another level
As a freshman, Haley Cavinder led the Bulldogs in scoring at 16.0 points per game. She is doing the same again but has increased that avaerage to a league-leading 20.0 points per game. Without a 20-point outing during the opening weekend of the season, Cavinder has four in the last six games, which includes three in the last three outings, and two games with 19.
- Cavinder is averaging 22.3 points per game during her six games.
- After nearly three weeks off, Cavinder put up 52 points in two games in Wyoming.
- Cavinder is also leading the team in rebounding (7.9 rpg) and assists (3.8 apg).
Putting it all together
With high expectations after a solid freshman season as a reserve, Brooke Walling had struggled during the first moth of the season. With players in the frontcourt unavailable after the New Year in Wyoming, Walling had the best two-game stretch of her young career, scoring 20 points, 11 rebounds, six blocks and two steals while playing 76 of 85 minutes.
- Walling had a career-best 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting in the Bulldogs' 83-80 win.
Utti's return
Not playing for nearly a month, Maddi Utti returned to the Bulldogs' lineup in Wyoming. Scoring just two points in her first game back, the senior collected 11 rebounds. After dusting the rust off in Game 1, Utti posted her first double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 rebounds in Game 2.
- Utti scored six of the Bulldogs' final seven points in the overtime win in Laramie.
- Game 2 saw Utti knocked down a career-best five 3-pointers on five attempts.

Bulldog Bones
- Sunday's game for Fresno State was originally scheduled to be against San Jose State in San Jose, California. Then that game was moved to Phoenix, Arizona. On Friday, the game was postponed due to a COVID-19 issue within the Spartans program.
- While CSU Bakersfield canceled its previously schedule game with the Bulldogs on Dec. 17, the two teams suddenly had an open date in their schedules. In less than 24 hours, the game was made official.
- The contest will be Fresno State's fifth nonconference game this season.
- The 'Dogs have had an up and down first month and a half of the season, heading into January with a 3-3 record. They twice responded to losses with a win.
- Fresno State ranks 23rd nationally in scoring offense at 84.2 points per game. The 'Dogs have scored at least 90 points in half of their games. The Bulldogs posted 90 and 93 in its last two outings, the first time a Fresno State team has done that since the opening of the 2005-06 season.
- Fresno State currently ranks 13th nationally in turnovers per game (11.9).
- Haley leads the Bulldogs and the Mountain West in scoring at 20.8 points per game. With three straight 20-point games, and four in the last six games, the sophomore ranks 32nd in the NCAA in scoring.
- Alongside her twin sister Hanna (18.1 ppg), the two have combined to score at least 38 points in six the team's eight games. Fresno State is 4-2 in those six contests.
- Madd Utti and the Cavinders were 1, 2, 3 in the scoring for the Bulldogs during the opening four games of the season, accounting for 54.6 points per game. With Utti back in the lineup at Wyoming the three combined for 65 of the team's 83 points.
- Wyoming enters Sunday's game at 1-4 on the year, last having played on Jan. 2.
- The Roadrunners were scheduled to face Cal Poly this weekend prior to the two-game series being canceled.
- CSUB dropped its first two games in Big West play, falling 61-57 and 68-59 at Long Beach State.
- The Roadrunners are averaging 56.6 points per game, reaching 60 points once in their five games, a 60-52 win over Cal.
- Shooting 42.7 percent from the field, they are hitting at just a 25.6 percent clip from 3.
