'Dogs drop nonconference contest to CSU Bakersfield, 81-69
1/10/2021 5:56:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FRESNO, Calif. – Three days ago, Fresno State and CSU Bakersfield were not on the schedule for Sunday afternoon. With little time to prepare for either team, the Roadrunners 3-point shooting played a huge role late in the game, handing the Bulldogs their second defeat of the season at the Save Mart Center, 81-69.
After Kendyll Kinzer knocked down a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter and give the Bulldogs a two-point lead, CSUB got hot from deep, knocking down six 3-pointers in the period to seize control of what was a nip-and-tuck contest.
Hanna Cavinder finished with a game-high 16 points, closely followed by Haley Cavinder at 15. Wytalla Motta also chipped in a career-best 13 points and Brooke Walling had 10. The Roadrunners, like the Bulldogs had four players in double figures with Lexus Green recording a team-high 14 points.
Key Stat
Averaging 4.4 made 3's per game entering the contest, CSU Bakersfield shot 6-of-7 from beyond the arc during the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs had limited them to 4-of-18 through the first three quarters.
How It Happened
CSU Bakersfield came out controlling the opening quarter as Fresno State struggled to get its shots to fall early. The Roadrunners held a 20-percent difference overall in the first. Just 90 seconds into the second period, a 3-pointer from Sophie Tougas gave CSUB its largest lead to that point at 20-12. The Bulldogs then began to find life through its defense as a block at one end from Walling quickly turned into an and-one at the other end for Motta. Two minutes later, Kinzer made her first appearance in the game, sinking back-to-back 3-pointers as the 'Dogs rattled off 13 unanswered points to go up 25-20 with 4:10 on the clock. The Roadrunners responded but a Motta layup at the end of the half put the Bulldogs up 32-31.
Fresno State led by as much as four in the third but a late 8-0 run by CSUB put the visitors ahead by two at the end of the third. Just 15 seconds into the fourth, the Bulldogs regained the lead behind Kinzer's third 3 of the game, but from that point on, the 'Dogs were just 6-of-19 from the field. In contrast, the Roadrunners connected on 6-of-7 from deep. Trailing by five with just over four minutes remaining, Fresno State looked to force a stop to help turn momentum, but a deep shot under pressure from Miracle Saxon dropped in. Fresno State was only able to manage to pull to as close as five within the final minute.

Opening Statement…
"We watched some film on Bakersfield so we knew they could push it out a little bit. When they had a run in the first, I wasn't too worried. I thought we did a good job at keeping it close and staying in it going in to halftime. We had a few turnovers that I wasn't excited about. We didn't have as many turnovers in the second half, but we could not guard the three. We didn't guard the three very well and we lost the rebounding war as well. It's never a good thing for us. I thought we knocked some free throws down in the first half and built up a little bit of a lead. We played a little bit of a different lineup tonight, a little more post-oriented. I don't think we were as effective with that bigger lineup so that is unfortunate."
On poor shooting…
"I think we could shoot the three better. That is a big thing for us right now. We have to make sure we hit that outside shot. I thought we were not good at all in transition tonight. That is something that we really rely on, and something that we are going to really focus on also."
On Madi Utti and Aly Gamez…
"The fact that Maddi, Aly and Keely were unavailable today, we had to look at some different types of lineups. We are a little bit banged up. We didn't have a preseason and the summer wasn't available to us so those things have crept in on us. And of course there is the whole COVID thing. We have a lot of obstacles that we are having to overcome. I have told the girls that we have to play with the people that are available. We have to play harder than we did today. We played hard at times, but there were a lot of 50/50s on the ground and rebounding. It is a big effort thing. Playing the post, we would have liked to see more rebounds and we didn't get that so we are going to have to get back to the drawing board and see what we can do."
On the time to prepare for the game…
"The good news was we were going to play them earlier so we already had a scout ready. We were able to practice and prepare for what we thought we were going to see. It is just making us tougher. We played a solid second game in Wyoming, we had momentum and focus, and then we weren't going to play the first [game versus San Jose State], but we were going to play the second, then we weren't going to play the second game, then we called up Bakersfield. We needed to make up that game and it was nice they were able to come. The reality is, we need games. It was a good game to have AJ back, we are excited to see her back in the lineup. We had Genna back and we saw Maria back. It was a good game for some of those kids to get some minutes in, but unfortunately not the outcome we wanted. When you have different lineups constantly, that is really hard on your team. We are just taking it day by day. We have a day off tomorrow because we have been going pretty strong. We will refocus and get ready for Nevada."
