RENO, Nev. -- For the second time in the last eight days, Kaelyn Miller produced when Fresno State needed it. On Friday night, the freshman buried a 68th-minute strike to give the Bulldogs the go-ahead goal in a defensive 1-0 win over Nevada on a chilly night at Mackay Stadium.
The win moved Fresno State back into a tie atop the Mountain West standings with New Mexico at 19 points. Both teams are three points clear of third-place San Diego State. The win also clinched the Bulldogs a berth in the 2021 Mountain West Championship, their fourth straight trip to the conference's six-team tournament.
How It Happened
Following a defensive first half that saw just five total shots with none on frame, Fresno State looked to continue controlling match and up the pressure on the Wolf Pack in second 45 minutes. After 15 minutes, the match began to tilt during the final half hour as the chances started to come for Fresno State.
In the 62nd minute, Robyn McCarthy lofted a cross into the box where Sam Tristan pushed a header just wide from 10 yards out. A minute later, Jordan Brown hit a shot from 30 yards that had eyes for the underside of the crossbar that forced Kendal Stovall to punch it up and out of play. A string of corners came as the Bulldogs were relentless with their pressure.Â
In the 68th minute, Fresno State found the breakthrough. Soaring up the right flank, Jaylyn Wright sent in a cross that drifted toward the goal and caromed off the crossbar. The bouncing ball fell to Kaelyn Miller and the freshman didn't flinch, rifling home a right-footed shot.
Five minutes later, Bailee Kern nearly added an insurance goal, heading a cross back across the face of the goal but a Nevada defender stood her ground and headed it off the line.
Scoring Summary
67:46 - FS - Kaelyn Miller (Jaylyn Wright)
