LAS VEGAS – Looking to keep pace with New Mexico in the Mountain West standings, Fresno State dropped a 3-0 result on Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Rebels found the back of the net three times in the final 40 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs (8-6-3, 6-3-1 MW) remain three points back of New Mexico, who won earlier in the day, with one match remaining in the conference season. They are two points ahead of third-place Utah State, and three points clear of Colorado State and San Diego State.
How It Happened
Looking like Friday in Northern Nevada, the opening 45 minutes played out similarly in the South, with Fresno State looking the more dangerous team in possession. The Bulldogs held a 5-2 shot advantage during the first half.
UNLV broke the deadlock in the 54th minute. A whistle just outside the top of box set up a free kick for Lourdes Bosch who struck the top left corner on her attempt. Pushing forward for an equalizer, Jordan Brown and Bailee Kern each found the crossbar within a 10-minute span.
Shortly after the second miss, Kennedi Schmidt got loose on a breakaway for the Rebels to make it 2-0 in the 74th minute.
Four minutes later, Kassandra Ceja split the Rebel defense outside the box but was taken down just on the edge. Her low free kick past the wall was deflected into the hands of Riley Liebsack. Less than a minute later, Ceja was again taken down outside box before gaining a head of steam. Her low attempt from the left side was knocked away.
UNLV added a third goal in the final minutes.
Scoring Summary
53:30 – UNLV – Lourdes Bosch
73:30 – UNLV – Kennedi Schmidt (Lourdes Bosch)
85:03 – UNLV – Hevani Haunga (Lourdes Bosch)
