SAN DIEGO – In a second half of runs, San Diego managed to hold off a late Fresno State rally as the Bulldogs dropped Game 1 of The Dana on Mission Bay Holiday Tournament 68-64 on Friday at Jenny Craig Pavilion. Trailing by 10 with under three minutes to play, the Bulldogs were able to pull within two with 24 seconds on the clock following a 9-1 run before USD closed out the game at the line.
Hanna Cavinder led the Bulldogs with 16 points while Haley Cavinder added 13 points and team highs of eight rebounds and six assists.
How It Happened
After four turnovers in the opening four minutes saw the Bulldogs go down 6-0, a 3-pointer from Yanina Todorova got the Bulldogs' offense going. Imani Lacy followed with back-to-back buckets to give the 'Dogs their first lead of the day. Fresno State closed the quarter with six unanswered to take a 16-11 advantage. The Bulldogs maintained the lead through the second but saw their lead cut to two in the finals minutes as San Diego ended the half with a 7-2 spurt.
The Toreros continued their run into the third before the teams began trading leads early in the half. As USD took a 36-32 edge with five minutes to play in the period, a Haley Cavinder triple from the wing sparked a Bulldog barrage. In just over the three minutes, Fresno State went on a 15-2 run, taking a 47-38 lead with under two minutes left in the quarter. The 'Dogs finished the final five minutes of the third, outscoring the Toreros 19-5, scoring on eight of their final nine possessions, and took a 51-41 lead into the fourth.
As quick as the Bulldogs built their lead in third, it disappeared just as fast in the fourth. USD leveled the game at 51-51 in just over two minutes. The Toreros extended their run to 18 unanswered to open the period as the 'Dogs missed their first nine shots before Hanna Cavinder ended the drought with 4:41 to play.
USD built its lead back up to 10 during the ensuing minutes. A 3-pointer from Charisse Fairley with 1:51 on the clock started a 9-1 swing within 90 seconds in Fresno State's favor as the 'Dogs closed to within two with 24 seconds remaining. A pair from Ayanna Khalfani at the line though put the game out of reach for the 'Dogs.
