Fresno State defeats SMU, 11-7

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 6 Fresno State equestrian team picked up an 11-7 win over No. 7 SMU at the Student Horse Center on Saturday afternoon. Fresno State finishes the weekend with a 1-1 split.Â
The 'Dogs won three of the four Most Outstanding Performer honors in the win. Cecily Hayes won the MOP in the flat with a 85.5-81.5 ride. Senior Hannah Buijs won the horsemanship MOP with a 77.5 to her opponent's 77. Bailey Alexander won the reining MOP with a 73-71.5 win in the event.Â
The Bulldogs opened the morning with a 3-2 win in the fences, but fell 2-3 in the horsemanship to take a tie into the break. In the fences, the Bulldogs won points from Cecily Hayes, Grace Mathias and Lizzie Stodden. The pair of horsemanship points came from Buijs and Alex Krebs.Â
Fresno State had an outstanding performance in the flat, out scoring the Mustangs 4-1 to take a demanding lead in the meet. The Bulldog points came from Hayes, Sara Tuck, Olivia Ferro and Taylor Holstead.Â
The 'Dogs wrapped up with a 2-1 win in the reining, with a pair of ties from Julianne Kelley and Hannah Hieber. The Bulldog points were earned by Alexander and Ashley Jackson.Â
Fresno State's next text is against SMU again, this time in Dallas. The Bulldogs will hit the road for a trip to Texas on Nov. 19-20, taking on SMU and Baylor at their home arenas to close out the fall slate.Â
