COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Coming off a season-high 17-point effort on Saturday, Fresno State's Tamia Stricklin was named Mountain West Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Monday morning. In her first career start the freshman shot 5-of-7 from the field and was 4-of-5 from the 3-point line.
Stricklin's 17 points at CSU Bakersfield were the most points by a Bulldog freshman since March 4, 2020. Going into the game, the native of Renton, Wash., had scored a combined 18 in the previous eight games. Her four made 3-pointers also moved her season total from two to six. She also helped out her teammates by dishing out four assists, matching her season total from the previous eight games. On the defensive end she held the Roadrunners' top offensive threat to just 4-of-12 from the field, and below her season scoring average.
With Fresno State trailing 7-0 to start the game, Stricklin hit back-to-back 3-pointers on her first two shot attempts. In the Bulldogs' nine-point second quarter swing, she recorded three of her four assists (8 points) to help the Bulldogs turn an 18-11 first quarter deficit into a 35-33 halftime lead. Her third 3-pointer of the game came in the middle of a 9-2 run midway through the third quarter to give Fresno State a 47-43 lead. The Bulldogs never trailed the remainder of the game.
Stricklin and the Bulldogs will be back at the Save Mart Center on Saturday against UC Merced for their first game at home since Nov. 23.
