'Dogs win season opener in four sets

For the fifth straight season, the Fresno State volleyball team won its season opener defeating San Diego State in four sets on Friday evening at Peterson Gym.
SAN DIEGO - For the fifth straight season, the Fresno State volleyball team won its season opener defeating San Diego State in four sets on Friday evening at Peterson Gym.
Fresno State (1-0, 1-0 MW) overcame a 25-22 first set loss to win the next three sets, 25-16, 25-18, 25-18.
It was only the 'Dogs second win at San Diego State in nine tries since joining the Mountain West in 2012 as the 'Dogs outhit the San Diego State (0-3, 0-3 MW) .246 to .087.
Senior outside hitter Desiree Sukhov led the Bulldogs with 18 kills while hitting .293 and the 2019 MW Newcomer of the Year added five digs and two blocks assists.
Sophomore middle blocker Grace Doyle finished with 10 kills, six block assists and two digs while redshirt sophomore Julia Handy set a new career high with 38 assists.
How It Happened
After dropping the opening set 25-22, the Bulldogs rebounded with a strong start to the second set taking a 13-8 lead after a kill by Sukhov (watch). A kill by outside hitter Savanah Smith extended the 'Dogs lead to 22-13 (watch) and the set closed out with a kill by Sukhov (watch) for the Bulldogs' first set win of the season.
The 'Dogs continued their strong offense in the third set going up 11-5 with a kill by Doyle (watch) and continued to lead throughout the set building as large of an eight points before a kill by Sukhov closed out the set (watch).
With the Aztecs taking a early 5-4 lead in the fourth set, the 'Dogs quickly answered back with a 12-1 run that featured five kills and two aces to go up 16-6 as Fresno State did not look back winning the set 25-18 (watch).

The Bulldogs close out action on opening weekend on Saturday against the Aztecs at 2 p.m.

- Sukhov notched her 20th career match with double digit kills.
- It was Doyle's fourth career match with double-figure kills.
- Handy's previous career high in assists was 20 against Air Force on Nov. 16, 2019.
- Smith set a new career high with 11 digs besting her previous high of five.
- Amaria Kelley (5) and Rebecca Rendahl (7) each set career highs in blocks.
- Fresno State has now won eight of its last nine road openers.
- It was the first time since 2012 the Bulldogs have opened a season in a true road match.
