No. 11 Fresno State wraps up busy weekend

FRESNO, Calif. – The No. 11 Fresno State water polo team wrapped up a busy weekend at the Aquatics Center falling to No. 3 UCLA and No. 8 Cal on Sunday night.Â
Six different Bulldogs scored in the matchup against the Bruins, while five scored against the Bears. The offense was led by Callie Woodruff and Daphne Guevremont, the duo combined for eight goals. Kate Watley logged the most minutes in the cage for the 'Dogs, grabbing a total of nine saves on the day.Â

vs. No. 3 UCLA – Guevremont won the first sprint of the game. The Bulldogs' offense opened scoring when Coachman found the back of the net. The Bruins responded with a 5-0 run, taking a four-goal lead with 2:58 left in the first quarter. Jagielski found Nicholson in the middle for the final goal of the quarter, ending the Bruins run. On defense, Watley blocked two shots at point black range to keep Fresno State within three goals.
UCLA scored out of the huddle to start the second quarter. Fresno State answered back when Nicholson drew an exclusion to give the 'Dogs a one-player advantage. She dished the ball from the center out to Jagielski. UCLA drew two exclusions, gaining a two-player advantage, but the Bulldogs denied a score from the Bruins and took it back the other way drawing an exclusion of their own. Jagielski capitalized on the advantaging, scoring to complete the power play for the 'Dogs. UCLA's offense swung the momentum back to its side of the pool, finishing the quarter with three consecutive goals to take a 10-4 lead into halftime.
The Bruins opened the third quarter on the attack, but Guevremont countered with her first goal of the day off a pass from Grace O'Callaghan. The Bruins strung together back-to-back goals to take a 13-5 lead with 6:32 left in the quarter. Guevremont came in clutch for Fresno State nailing a 5-meter shot to keep the 'Dogs within striking distance. Woodruff made it back-to-back Bulldog goals after scoring on a power play. UCLA and Fresno State exchanged goals through the remainder of the quarter, Fresno State had the last goal as Guevremont chalked her hat trick off a pass from Nicholson.
UCLA took a 17-9 lead into the final quarter. Jagieslski chalked her second goal of the game, converting a 5-meter penalty shot for the final Fresno State goal of the game. UCLA would score two more goals before time ran out and would walk away with a 19-10 victory.

vs. No. 8 Cal – Jagielski picked up where she left off in the first game, nailing a 5-meter penalty shot to open up scoring for the Bulldogs. Cal quickly responded with a goal of their own, only to be countered by another Fresno State goal this time from Woodruff.
Cal found an offensive spark, netting three consecutive goals to take its first lead of the game 4-2. Watley had a huge save denying Cal a goal in a fast break situation. Woodruff stayed aggressive on offense, finding the back of the net for her second goal to put the 'Dogs within one at the end of the first quarter.
Guevremont tabbed her first goal of the game to start the second quarter, tying the contest 4-4. The Bears responded with a series of offensive attacks going on a 5-0 run, taking a 9-4 lead into halftime.
Cal continued its scoring rampage in the second half with back-to-back goals, extending the Bears lead 11-4. Woodruff ended the Bulldogs' scoring drought firing the ball to the back of the cage, chalking a hat trick on the game for the senior. The team traded goals to end the third period. Cal took a six-goal advantage into the final eight minutes.
Coachman scored the final goal for Fresno State in the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs were unable to match the Bears' offensive fire power as Cal logged a 16-7 win.
