FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team showed a lot of fight on the final day of the 2021 Fresno State Kickoff Classic, falling in a close game to No. 10 Oregon before displaying offensive dominance in a victory over UCSB.
Fresno State becomes 3-5 on the season.
Game One vs. Oregon – An extraordinary game-clinching catch in centerfield by Oregon's All-American Haley Cruse for the final out was the difference in a tough 2-1 Bulldogs loss against No. 10 Oregon to open Sunday's doubleheader.
In the bottom of the seventh, Hayleigh Galvan recorded just the third hit of the game for the Bulldogs and the sixth hit of the contest between both teams in a tight pitchers' duel. Alesia Denby hit a two-out flair shot to shallow centerfield, which appeared destined to hit the ground and allow pinch-runner Aaliyah Cuevas to score and tie the game, but Cruse secured the win for the Ducks in dramatic fashion.
After racking up 10 runs, and 15 hits Saturday night, Haley Dolicini pitched a gem surrendering just two runs on three hits against the Ducks. The difference was that two of the three hits were solo home runs. The first a solo shot to centerfield in the third inning, and a second in the fourth inning over the left-field fence.
Keahilele Mattson accounted for the 'Dogs sole run that crossed the plate. The freshman tallied the Bulldogs' first hit on Sunday in the third inning, and Kaitlyn Jennings brought her around with an RBI single to tie the game, 1-1.
Oregon would reclaim the lead with a home run on the first at-bat in the very next frame in the fourth, which proved to be the difference.
Game Two vs. UCSB – The Bulldogs offense came alive in their second game of the day against the Gauchos of UCSB. Fresno State rattled off a season-high 10 runs off of 12 hits to claim the victory 10-5. Jennings carried the hot bat going 3-for-4 at plate in the leadoff position, with two rbi's and one extra base hit.
Jennings opened the bottom of the first inning with a leadoff triple, then scoring the first run off an infield ground out from Galvan for the lead.
Fresno State busted the game open in third inning when its offense caught fire to produce eight runs. Kelcey Carrasco hit a three-run home run over the left field fence, her second moonshot of the weekend. Freshmen Mattson and Lilianna Mejia found their groove, smashing a double a piece to tack on two more runs. The top of the order made its way back around, and Jennings hit a two-rbi single. Galvan batted in the final run putting down an rbi single.
UCSB prevented a run-rule decision, scoring four runs between the fourth and fifth innings.
Juliana Martinez responded for the Bulldogs in fifth inning, crushing her first triple of the season to score the final run for Fresno State
Sophomore Dariana Orme entered the circle to close out the game, she logged three strikeouts and the Bulldogs took the win 10-5.
