'Dogs drop series finale against Aggies, 6-5

LOGAN, Utah – The Fresno State softball team dropped the series finale against Utah State 6-5 on Sunday afternoon. The Aggies completed the comeback win over the Bulldogs with a walk-off grand slam. Fresno State falls to 17-7 (5-1 MW) on the season.
"We punched first, we're punched back and we kept fighting," head coach Linda Garza. "Keahilele Mattson had some clutch at-bats. We were rolling and I tip my hat to the Utah State defense who robbed a two-run home run in the top 7th. We needed to execute for one more out and couldn't get it done. This one stings. We will be back because that's what Bulldogs do."Â
In the circle, Hailey Dolcini and Danielle Lung split time combing for nine strikeouts.
How It Happen – Senior Schuylar Broussard opened scoring in the third inning with a solo home run over the center field fence, and two singles would plate another run to extend the lead.
The Aggies bounced back in the top of the fourth inning with a leadoff home run and then tying the game on a passed ball. Lung stepped in the circle for Dolcini and retired the final batter with a strikeout.
The Bulldogs retook the lead in the sixth inning after Mattson sent a two-run home run to left center, her fourth of the season. Fresno State tallied two more runs in the seventh, taking a 5-2 lead into the final frame of the game.
Utah State quickly loaded the bases. Gabriella Jimenez hit a two-out grand slam for the walk-off win, handing Fresno State its first loss of conference play.
The Bulldogs did walk away with the series win after winning the first two games against the Aggies.
Up Next – Fresno State will return home to Margie Wright Diamond to host New Mexico April 2-3.
