3/6/2021 12:55:00 PM | Equestrian
DALLAS - The No. 5 Fresno State equestrian team faced its first loss of the season as it fell 12-3 at No. 8 SMU at the Dallas Equestrian Center on Saturday morning. The Bulldogs are now 3-1 on the season, 1-0 in Big 12 meets.
Â
Fresno State had high-scoring rides across the board, but not enough for what the Mustangs could perform on their home horses. The highlight of the meet came from junior jumping seat rider Cecily Hayes who scored a program-record 94 in the flat. The previous record was shared by Alexandra Dirickson (2018) and Kimberly Hewson-Budnik (2013) with a 93.
Â
How it happened
SMU opened with a 3-1 win in the flat. The Bulldogs' only point was from Hayes' record-breaking ride as she defeated her opponent 94-92. The Mustangs swept the horsemanship event to extend the lead to 7-1 at the break.
Â
The Bulldogs earned the first point of the fences event, but that was all as Ana Bertozzi outscored her SMU opponent, 85-74. Fresno State earned its last point of the meet from Bailey Alexander in the reining. Alexander scored a 71.5 to her opponent's 71. Julianne Kelley tied in her ride with a career-high 72.
Notable
Up Next - The Bulldogs have two chances to bounce back tomorrow as they stay in Texas to face No. 7 Baylor (1-2, 1-1 Big 12) and No. 6 Oklahoma State (1-1, 1-1 Big 12) in neutral site meetings at TCU on Sunday. The events will be live streamed. The jumping seat live stream is available here and the western live stream can be found here. Live stats will also be available (vs. OSU), (vs. Baylor).
Â
The Sunday meets will be the last Big 12 meets for the Bulldogs this season, before the championships in April.
