Bulldogs sweep doubleheader against Rams to clinch series

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Fresno State softball team clinched the series win against Colorado State with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday. The Bulldogs (24-7, 10-1 MW) defeated the Rams (8-12, 2-3 MW) 8-3 in game one and 8-7 in game two.
Senior Kaitlyn Jennings led the Bulldogs at the plate going 4-for 6, plating five runs with a double and a home run. In the circle, three pitchers made appearances for Fresno State.
Game One – Jennings opened the series with a leadoff home run. The Rams responded in the bottom half of the frame with two runs on five hits to take a 2-1 lead over the Bulldogs.
Fresno State responded with a run in the next frame off a double from Adrianna Noriega and a sacrifice fly from Alesia Denby. The Bulldogs extended their lead in the third inning with two runs on one hit.
Vanessa Hernandez hit a solo home run in the top of sixth to take 5-2 lead. The Bulldogs locked in the win with a three-run inning in the final inning of the game, as a result of a home run from Schuylar Broussard and three additional single-base hits.
Colorado State attempted to rally in the bottom half of the frame but fell short, only plating one run.
Game Two – Fresno State picked up where they left off in game one, plating a run in the opening inning. After the game was scoreless for two innings, Fresno State added onto its lead in the fourth inning with back-to-back home runs from Noriega and Miranda Rohleder.
The Rams countered with a four-run inning off five hits, taking a 4-3 lead.
Fresno State responded with five runs in the next frame to retake the lead, tallying six hits for an 8-4 lead with two innings to go. The Rams came within one run, chalking three runs in the final two innings but came up short of the comeback.
Up Next – Fresno State and Colorado State will finish the series on Sunday at 11 a.m. PT.
