No. 11 Bulldogs secure spot in 2021 GCC Championship game

STOCKTON, Calif. – No. 1 seed Fresno State had a dominant performance to open the 2021 Golden Coast Conference Championship Tournament, defeating No. 3 California Baptist 18-10 in the semifinal on Friday afternoon.

Callie Woodruff and Daphne Guevremont led the Bulldogs on offense with three goals apiece. Additional goal scorers included Emily Nicholson (2), Cynthia Rosa (2), Emily Diacono (2), Isabella Sonkoly (1), Sydney Coachman (1), Megan Greenwood (1), Sienna Jagielski (1), Kaitlin Howarth (1) and Claire Schade (1). Schade bolstered the offense with a career-high six assists in the contest.
Hope Stokes and Kate Watley both recorded minutes in goal for Fresno State. Watley chalked the start, grabbing two saves. Stokes logged seven saves in relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs and the Lancers exchanged goals to open the game. Rosa and Jagielski combined for back-to-back goals, retaking the lead 3-1. CBU found the back of the net to cut Fresno State's lead in half. Nicholson extended the Bulldogs' lead, netting two consecutive goals. The Lancers managed to score two more goals before the end of the quarter, while the Bulldogs scored one of their own. Fresno State owned a 6-4 lead after the first eight minutes.
Guevremont struck first for the Bulldogs to start the second quarter, but CBU countered with a goal of its own. Fresno State ignited its offense going on a 4-0 run to end the quarter with an 11-4 lead.
The Bulldogs continued their offensive dominance, chalking back-to-back goals to start the third quarter. The Lancers ended the 6-0 run with a goal of their own after the Bulldogs managed to hold them scoreless for nearly nine minutes. Fresno State finished the quarter outscoring CBU 4-2 to take a 17-8 lead into the final quarter.
Preciado scored the final goal for the Bulldogs. The Lancers were able to tally two more goals but it wouldn't be enough. Fresno State walked away with an 18-10 victory for the first GCC semifinal win in program history.
The Bulldogs advance to the championship game tomorrow at 12 p.m. PT against No. 2 San Diego State.
The Aztecs defeated No. 3 Pacific 11-8 to punch their ticket to the final.
