No. 10 Bulldogs fall to No. 2 Cardinal in NCAA Quarterfinal, 16-9

LOS ANGELES – The No. 10 Fresno State water polo team fell to No. 2 Stanford in the quarterfinals of the 2021 NCAA Tournament, 16-9, on Friday evening in the Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bulldogs finish their historic season with an overall record of 13-6 (6-1 GCC) after making their first NCAA appearance in program history.
"What an incredible season," head coach Natalie Benson said. "Through all of the obstacles and adversity of a covid season, the team stuck together and believed in the journey. I'm very proud of how the team competed today; they fought for the entire game and earned a lot of respect in the process."
Emily Nicholson led the Bulldogs' offense with three goals, seven drawn exclusions and two steals. Hope Stokes chalked the start in goal for the Bulldogs and recorded eight saves in the contest.
Additional scorers included Callie Woodruff (2), Daphne Guevremont (2), Cynthia Rosa (1) and Claire Schade (1).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stanford struck first to open scoring, but Guevremont responded with a goal to knot the game 1-1. The Cardinal finished the first quarter with back-to-back goals. Stanford continued its scoring streak with three consecutive goals to start the second quarter, taking a 6-1 lead. Schade sent the ball to the back of the net to end Stanford's run. The Cardinal took a 6-2 into the half.
Stanford scored one to start the third quarter, but the Bulldogs retaliated with three consecutive goals to make it a 7-4 game with 5:09 left in the third quarter. The Cardinal logged back-to-back goals, but the Bulldogs stopped their momentum there as Woodruff netted her second goal of the game. Stanford closed out the quarter with a 4-0 run to take a 12-5 advantage into the final eight minutes.
The Bulldogs continued fighting throughout the final quarter. Fresno State and Stanford scored four goals apiece before time expired, leaving Stanford with a 16-9 victory to advance to the semifinal round..
