TOKYO – Former Fresno State softball standout and the most decorated softball Olympian of all-time Laura Berg is an assistant coach for the United States Olympic Softball Team at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Berg and Team U.S.A. earned back-to-back shutout wins to open the XXXII Olympiad, which was delayed nearly a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. On Tuesday, Team U.S.A. began the opening round with a 2-0 defeat of Italy and followed up today with a 1-0 win over Canada.
Berg has been involved with USA Softball as both an athlete and a coach.
As an athlete, Berg proved herself to be one of the game's greatest outfielders, helping lead Team U.S.A. to three Olympic Gold Medals in 1996, 2000 and 2004, and also holds an Olympic Silver Medal from the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Berg is the most decorated USA Softball Olympic athlete in history with four Olympic medals.
She was appointed to the WNT coaching staff in 2012 and served as an assistant before being named the head coach for the Junior WNT in 2017 that earned Gold at the World Baseball Softball Confederation Junior Women's World Championship.
As a Bulldog, Berg was a four-time All-American, whose collegiate career was highlighted by a NCAA Championship title in 1998.
Also leading Fresno State to three Women's College World Series appearances and a pair of conference crowns, Berg is the only Bulldog to record three consecutive 100-hit seasons. She finished with a .414 career batting average while also ranking among the NCAA's best in at bats, runs and triples. Berg finished her career ranked No. 1 all-time in career hits at Fresno State and No. 2 all-time in NCAA history
In addition to competing in four Olympic Games, Berg also played in four World Baseball Softball Confederation, (WBSC), formerly the International Softball Federation (ISF), World Championships and three Pan American Championships, all of which were Gold Medal finishes.
Berg graduated from Fresno State in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in recreation and leisure studies, served as the assistant coach for the Bulldog softball program from 2000-03 and returned for a second time in 2005 after participating in the 2004 Summer Olympic Games.
In 2015, Berg was honored by Fresno State with the retirement of her jersey - just the second in the program's history.
