'Dogs outlasted in Corvallis

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Three days after opening the season in Eugene, Fresno State headed up to Corvallis on Sunday afternoon, dropping a tightly contested match 2-1 at Lorenz Field. Trailing 2-0 early in the second half, the Bulldogs looked to mount a comeback in the final half hour following a goal from freshman Sam Tristan but the 'Dogs were unable to find a late equalizer.
How It Happened
A feeling out process early on, both sides saw chances in the first 10 minutes. A long-range effort from Bailee Kern 90 seconds in skimmed above the crossbar. But less than two minutes later, OSU's McKenna Martinez found space through the middle and had a one-on-one opportunity with Ella Wilson. The lifted attempt though was punched away by Fresno State's freshman keeper who was making her first start.
In the ninth minute, Jordan Brown nearly put he 'Dogs on the board as the senior found a pocket of space just outside the top of the box. Striking a low shot toward the left corner, Bridgette Skiba was forced to make a diving stop, pushing the attempt wide of the post.
Helena Brown broke the deadlock in the 14th minute for the home side. With an overloaded left side in transition, Martinez found a streaking Brown down the right flank. The junior went 1-v-1 with Wilson and managed to slide the shot past the oncoming keeper. The Beavers continued to work that flank throughout the half but Fresno State's defense in front of its goal was able to keep the Beavers from finding a second.
With Tristan entering the game midway through the half, the freshman had an attempt knocked up into the air and into the six-yard box where it sat down for Kassandra Ceja. Skiba, though, was there to keep the 'Dogs off the board again.
While Fresno State managed to limit Oregon State's attempts in the second half, the Beavers doubled their advantage less than five minutes in. Sophie Conrad sent a low cross in from the end line that slipped through to Amber Jackson just inside the top of the six, giving Wilson little time to react.
Tristan cut the Beavers' lead to 2-1 with less than a half hour to go. The Clovis native avoided two defenders just outside the right corner of the 18 and lofted a shot up and over Skiba where it found the top left netting. Fresno State managed just one shot the remainder of the game.
