FRESNO, Calif. – Trailing 1-0 through the first hour, a red card put Fresno State in an uphill battle on Sunday afternoon before ultimately falling 2-0 to Utah State on Senior Day at Bulldog Soccer Stadium.
How It Happened
Following a pair of attempts on goal in the fourth minute, Utah State grabbed the lead in the seventh. After a foul in the midfield, the Aggies quickly transitioned down the left channel where Bizzy Arevalo slotted the ball to an open Sammie Murdock on the right inside the box before the Aggie took a shot back across goal past Valentina Vivas.
USU kept the pressure on but in the 23rd minute, the Bulldogs saw their chance off a corner from Kaya Scott. Kaelyn Miller struck a shot toward the left post but with three bodies in the way it was blocked toward the middle of the six-yard box. Jordan Lau got a touch back toward the net but the attempt was again knocked away by an Aggie. The 'Dogs recycled the ball back out to Scott who found Miller open near the top of the 18. Her attempt in a congested box was knocked out of harm's way.
Fresno State nearly scored the equalizer heading into the half. Looking to split a pair of defenders, Kassandra Ceja was taken down on the left flank in the 40th minute. The junior sent the free kick into the box where it was knocked down. Jaylyn Wright struck a half volley to the left side of the net but it produced a diving stop from McKenzie Hunninghake that maintained the Aggies' advantage.
Sixteen minutes into the second half, the Bulldogs' situation worsened when Shantay Tamez was whistled for taking down an attacker on a counter. Denying a breakaway, the senior was sent off, leaving the 'Dogs down a goal and down a player. Utah State was unable to capitalize on the ensuing free kick as the match remained 1-0 with 28 minutes remaining.
The Aggies found its insurance goal four minutes later when Jordan Foraker found the top right corner from 40 yards.
The Bulldogs were held without a shot the remainder of the match. They were outshot 17-7 on the day.
