LARAMIE, Wyo. – Headed for a draw, a free kick on the edge of the 18-yard box in the 89th minute resulted in Fresno State falling 2-1 to Wyoming to open its road trip. It was the Bulldogs' sixth one-goal loss this season.
How It Happened
Opening the game aggressively in the offensive third, Fresno State came close to scoring first. The fifth minute saw a bang-bang offside whistle go against the 'Dogs that negated a breakaway. Two minutes later, Kaelyn Miller got her chance, ripping a shot from the 18 but it caught the underside of the crossbar and came back out.
With Wyoming missing on a couple chances in the six, Miller was back on the attack in the 32nd minute. The sophomore split a pair of defenders on the edge of the box, got into the six but her shot was lifted over the bar. The Cowgirls capitalized, breaking the deadlock with six minutes to play in the half. Off a corner, Jamie Tatum sent a dangerous ball toward the goal line. With Bulldog keeper Valentina Vivas screened, Keelie Wortmann got her head onto the end of the cross to glance it in from a yard out.
Following another attempt from Miller in the opening minute of the second half, Wyoming began putting the 'Dogs under pressure in search of a second. Fresno State's defense held and a turnover in the midfield led to the Bulldogs leveling the match. Coming away with a takeaway, Jordan Lau sent a pass up to Kassandra Ceja. The junior found Miller on the right channel inside the box. Maintaining possession through a tackle, Miller struck a shot across the face of goal into the left netting.
With the match appearing to be headed for a draw, Wyoming hit the Bulldogs on a late counter attack. Adriana Maldonado was whistled for bumping a Cowgirl off the ball just outside the 18 with just under 70 seconds to play. Tatum stepped up and hit a shot around the wall and into the opposite net.
Scoring Summary
38:14 – WY – Keelie Wortmann (Jamie Tatum)
59:24 – FS – Kaelyn Miller (Kassandra Ceja, Jordan Lau)
88:55 – WY – Jamie Tatum
