SAN JOSE, Calif. – A late corner proved to be the difference on the final day of the Mountain West regular season as Fresno State fell to San Jose State 1-0 at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
How It Happened
In a tight first half with neither side generating many opportunities, it was the Spartans who got the best one. That came with less than 30 seconds to play in the half as Kayla Fortenberry clanged an attempt off the crossbar.
After Megan Galvan got the Bulldogs' first shot on target in the 54th minute, the senior winger got on the end of a long ball. With Bente Pernot racing out of her box, Galvan got a touch past the Spartan keeper but lost her momentum and a foul was called on the 'Dogs in a chase for the loose ball.
Ella Wilson kept the match scoreless momentarily in the 80th minute with a leaping one-handed save, tipping the ball over the crossbar. But two minutes later, Wilson was beaten to her right side by a header from Cynthia Flores off a corner.
