2022 Diamond 'Dogs in the Pros: Fall Update

FRESNO, Calif. - With the end of both the minor league season and the MLB regular season and the playoffs set to start tomorrow, let's take a look at how the 24 former Diamond 'Dogs in the major and minor leagues fared this season.
Majors
Aaron Judge, Outfielder, New York Yankees
Judge closed out his historic season this week hitting his 62nd home run to set the American League home run record.
The former Diamond 'Dog led the American League in home runs (62), RBI (131), runs (133), total bases (391), on-base pct. (.425), slugging pct. (.686), OPS (1.111) and WAR (10.6).
The Yankees went 99-63 overall winning the American League East and will be the number two seed in the AL playoffs.
Jimmy Lambert, Pitcher, Chicago White Sox
Lambert made 42 appearances for the White Sox this season while making a pair of starts.
The San Dimas native threw 47.0 innings striking out 45 while walking 24 and only allowed 17 earned runs. Lambert went 1-2 with a 3.26 ERA on the season with a win against the Houston Astros on Aug. 16 striking out a pair in a 4-3 win at home.
Chicago went 81-81 to finish second in the AL Central behind the Cleveland Guardians.
Dylan Lee, Pitcher, Atlanta Braves
Lee made 46 relief appearances for the defending World Series champion Atlanta Braves this season.
The Dinuba native posted a 5-1 record with a slim 2.13 ERA tossing 50.2 innings striking out 59 and walking only 10.Â
Lee struck out a season-high four in a pair of games, at Miami (Aug. 13) and against Philadelphia (Sept. 17).
Atlanta won the NL East with a 101-61 overall record and will be the number two seed in the AL playoffs.
Jordan Luplow, Outfielder, Arizona Diamondbacks
In 83 games in his first season with the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Clovis native tallied 36 hits, including 11 home runs, five doubles, 26 runs scored, drove in 28 RBI while drawing 25 walks.
After a short time in Triple A at the end of August and beginning of September, Luplow made his return to the Diamondbacks on Sept. 12. He finished up the season with seven hits over his final 10 games and had a 3-for-4 performance scoring a run in a 8-4 win over the San Francisco Giants on Oct. 1.
The Diamondbacks closed out the season 74-88 to finish fourth in the NL West Division.
Justin Wilson, Pitcher, Cincinnati Reds
Wilson made five relief appearances earlier this season for the Cincinnati Reds before being placed on the 60-day injured list in April and underwent Tommy John surgery in early June that sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
In 3.2 innings, Wilson only allowed three hits, one earned run and struck out seven while walking none.
Taylor Ward, Outfielder, Los Angeles Angels
Ward saw action in 135 games this season for the Angels hitting .281Â from the plate with 139Â hits.
Ranking third on the team with 23 home runs, the former All-American added 22 doubles, two triples, 65 RBI and 73 runs scored.Â
Ward tallied 11 three-hit contests this season with his final one coming on Oct. 2 adding an RBI and two runs scored. The Angels wrapped up the season with a 73-89Â overall record and finished third in the AL East.
Austin Wynns, Catcher, San Francisco Giants
After Wynns was traded from the Philadelphia Phillies organization to the Giants on June 8, the former Bulldog backstop played in 65 games in San Francisco.
The San Diego native finished with 42 hits with seven doubles, three home runs, 14 runs scored and 21 RBI for the Giants who went 81-81 overall to finish third in the NL West.
Minors
Carter Bins, Catcher, Indianapolis Indians (Pirates AAA)
After being promoted to Triple A Indianapolis on May 10, Bins saw action in 71 contests with the Indians.
The Fairfield native tallied 51 base knocks with 13 doubles, three triples and 10 home runs along with scoring 35 runs and driving in 32 RBI.
Bins tallied 14 multi-hit games with his final one coming on Sept. 18 against Toledo (Tigers AAA).
Indianapolis went 74-75 overall and tied for fourth in the International League West Division.
Jordan Brink, Pitcher, Wichita Wind Surge (Twins AA)
Brink got his first taste of Triple A this season making 23 appearances in relief for the El Paso Chihuahuas (Padres AAA) before being released on Aug. 15.
Signed four days later by the Minnesota Twins, he got his start with the FCL Twins and was promoted to Double A Wichita on Sept. 6. In four relief appearances, Brink went 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA striking out three in 3.1 innings and only allowed one earned run.
Wichita won the second half of the Texas League North Division, swept Tulsa (Dodgers AA) and advanced to the Texas League Championship series against Frisco dropping a pair of games.
Ryan Jensen, Pitcher, Tennessee Smokies (Cubs AA)
Jensen made 17 starts in Double A Tennessee this season posting a 2-4 record with a 4.25 ERA.
In 59.1 innings of work, Jensen struck out 60Â and held opponents to a .204Â average earning wins over Birmingham (White Sox AA) on July 31 and Mississippi (Braves AA) on Aug. 13.
Jensen made his last start on Sept. 1 throwing four shutout innings striking out five limiting Mississippi to one hit.
The Smokies advanced to the divisional round against the Rocket City Trash Pandas (Angels AA) winning a best-of-three series advancing to the Southern League Championship against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Marlins AA) where they fell in three games.
Zach Ashford, Outfielder, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Mets AA)
Ashford played the entire season in Double A with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies seeing time in 94 games hitting .250 from the plate.
He recorded 25 hits with 19 doubles, one triple and five home runs along with scoring 38 runs, driving in 42 RBI and nabbing 10 stolen bases.
Wrapping up the season on Sept. 17 against the Hartford Yard Goats (Rockies AA), Ashford went 2-for-3 in a 7-0 loss.
The Rumble Ponies finished 53-83 overall to finish sixth in the Eastern League Northeast Division.
Tyler Thomas, Pitcher, Frisco RoughRiders (Rangers AA)
Thomas made 26 relief appearances this season in Double A for the Frisco RoughRiders throwing 41.0 innings before being released on Aug. 16.
Thomas struck out 51 and held batters to a .240Â average from the plate on the season while limiting opponents to 26 walks.
The San Diego native went 1-1 with a 6.37 ERA earning a win over the Midland RockHounds (Athletics AA) on June 16 and struck out four in an 8-4 loss to Midland on July 17.
Edgar Gonzalez, Pitcher, Springfield Cardinals (Cardinals AA)
Gonzalez did not see any action this season as he spent the season on the injured list for Springfield who went 68-70 overall.
Fred Schlichtholz, Pitcher, San Antonio Missions (Padres AA)
Schlichtholz made four relief appearances this season for the High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps earning a win on June 10 over the Lake County Captains (Indians High A) before being promoted to Double A San Antonio Missions on June 14.
In 27 appearances in Double A San Antonio, the Coronado native posted a stellar 2.04 ERA in 35.1 innings striking out 41 and walking nine while only allowing eight earned runs on the season.
The Missions won the first half of the Texas League South Division with a 38-29 overall record and went 30-39 in the second half. San Antonio fell in a pair of games against Frisco (Rangers AA) in the Texas League divisional round.
McCarthy Tatum, Pitcher, Reading Fightin Phils (Phillies AA)
After seeing time in 36 games earlier in the season between High A with the Jersey Shore BlueClaws (32 games) along with four in Single A and two at the Rookie Level, Tatum was promoted to Double A Reading on Aug. 8.
The 2019 Tony Gwynn Co-Player of the Year appeared in 28 games for the Phils hitting .206 from the dish recording 21 hits with 13 extra-base knocks. Tatum tallied seven doubles, one triple and five home runs adding 13 RBI and 15 runs scored.
Reading posted a 61-77 record to finish fourth in the Eastern League Northeast Division.
Jaime Arias, Pitcher, Lake County Captains (Indians High A)
Arias saw action over three levels this season getting started in High-A earning a win on April 9 with the Lake County Captains before making a start in Triple A on April 21 against Indianapolis (Indians AAA).
Moving down to Double A, the Woodland, Calif. native has made seven starts & nine appearances for the Akron RubberDucks striking out 27 in 31.2 innings.
On June 21, he moved down to Lake County making six appearances and two starts before moving back up to Akron on July 26.
After six appearances in Akron, Arias moved down to Lake County closing out the season with three appearances with a start on Sept. 8 to close out the season tossing 2.2 innings striking out two against Fort Wayne (Padres AA).
Lake County went 41-22 in the second half to win the Midwest League East Division. The Captains topped the Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers High A) in a best-of-three division series before falling in the Midwest League Championship Series to the South Bend Cubs (Cubs High A).
Davis Moore, Pitcher, Wilmington Blue Rocks (Nationals High A)
Moore did not see any action this season spending time on the injured list this season after appearing in 33 games in relief between Single A and High A in 2021.
Jamison Hill, Pitcher, Amarillo Sod Poodles (Diamondbacks AA)
Hill made 21 starts for High A Hillsboro posting a 7-7 mark posting a 4.35Â ERA. The San Diego native struck out 115 in 103.1 innings while holding opponents to a .216Â average.
For his efforts, Hill was the Diamondbacks' Minor League Pitcher of the Month for July and received a promotion to Double A Amarillo on Aug. 23.
In five appearances, including four starts, Hill went 1-0 tossing 20.0 innings while registering 12 strikeouts. In his final appearance of the season against San Antonio (Padres AA) on Sept. 18, he earned a win working five scoreless innings striking out five while limiting the Missions to three hits in a 5-2 win.
Amarillo went 68-69 overall to finish third in the Texas League South Division
Ryan Higgins, Infielder, Aberdeen IronBirds (Orioles High A)
Higgins is in his first full season in the minors being promoted to High A Aberdeen IronBirds on June 28.
In 25 games, Higgins tallied 16 hits with four doubles, a triple and two home runs, drove in seven RBI and scored 10 runs. Prior to his promotion, Higgins saw action in 45 contests in Single A Delmarva, he hit .203 with 31 hits with eight doubles, two triples and two home runs, 18 RBI and 25 runs scored.
The IronBirds won the first half of the South Atlantic League North Division with a 43-23 record and went 35-31 in the second half of the season to win the division finishing with a 78-54 overall record.
Aberdeen defeated the Brooklyn Cyclones (Mets High A) in a best-of-three series before falling in three games to the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Rays High A).
JJ Santa Cruz, Pitcher, San Jose Giants (Giants Single A)
Making his season debut on June 9 at the Rookie level, the Madera native made five appearances striking out 15 in 8.2 innings of relief while earning a pair of wins.
Promoted to Single A San Jose on June 30, Santa Cruz saw action in nine relief appearances for the Giants working 9.2 innings striking out nine while walking three and earned a win on July 22.
Santa Cruz was released from the Giants on Aug. 9.
JT Arruda, Infielder, Fredericksburg Nationals (Nationals Single A)
Arruda made his return to the field on a rehab assignment with the FCL Nationals on June 7 before moving up to Class A Fredericksburg on June 12.
In 51 games with Fredericksburg, the Clovis native hit .276 from the plate with 47 hits, including nine doubles, three triples and four home runs, drove in 25 RBI and scored 41 runs.
Arruda finished the season with 13 multi-hit games, including a 3-for-5 performance with a triple, RBI and two runs scored in a 15-5 win over the Salem Red Sox (Red Sox A) on Sept. 6.
The Nationals went 33-33 in the first half of the season and 42-22 to win the second half of the Carolina League North Division. The Nationals fell to Lynchburg (Indians A) in the divisional round of the playoffs.
EJ Andrews, Jr., Outfielder, Fresno Grizzlies (Rockies Single A)
Andrews Jr. played in 80 games in Single A with the Fresno Grizzlies totaling 57 hits with 21 going for extra bases with 15 doubles, two triples and four home runs.
He has driven in 33Â RBI, drawn 28 walks, scored 41Â runs and closed out the season on Sept. 11 with a hit and an RBI in a 12-10 win over the San Jose Giants (Giants A).
The Grizzlies won the first half of the California League North Division with a 41-25 mark and went 42-24 in the second half to finish 83-49. Fresno beat San Jose in a pair of games in the divisional round before losing to Lake Elsinore (Padres A) in the championship round.
Zach Morgan, Catcher, San Jose Giants (Giants Single A)
A seventh-round selection in the 2022 MLB Draft, Morgan signed with the Giants on July 29 and made two appearances in Single A San Jose. He tallied a double, triple, an RBI, walk and scored two runs.
San Jose went 74-58 overall to finish second in the California League North Division falling in a pair of games to Fresno (Rockies A).
Andrew Kachel, Infielder, San Jose Giants (Giants Single A)
Joining Morgan in the San Francisco organization was Kachel who was selected in the 16th round of this year's MLB Draft.
Also signing on July 29, Kachel played in three games for the San Jose Giants with a pair of hits, including a double, two runs scored, two walks and four RBI.
San Jose went 74-58 overall to finish second in the California League North Division falling in a pair of games to Fresno (Rockies A).
Majors

Zach Morgan, Catcher, San Jose Giants (Giants Single A)
A seventh-round selection in the 2022 MLB Draft, Morgan signed with the Giants on July 29 and made two appearances in Single A San Jose. He tallied a double, triple, an RBI, walk and scored two runs.
San Jose went 74-58 overall to finish second in the California League North Division falling in a pair of games to Fresno (Rockies A).
Andrew Kachel, Infielder, San Jose Giants (Giants Single A)
Joining Morgan in the San Francisco organization was Kachel who was selected in the 16th round of this year's MLB Draft.
Also signing on July 29, Kachel played in three games for the San Jose Giants with a pair of hits, including a double, two runs scored, two walks and four RBI.
