FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team went 1-1 in the first two games of the series against UC Davis on Saturday afternoon at Margie Wright Diamond.
Sophomore Keahilele Mattson led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 4-for-6 with two doubles, two triples and two RBIs. Senior right-handed pitcher Danielle Lung earned her first win of the season. She pitched 5.06 innings while recording a season-high six stakeouts.
GAME 1Â
UC Davis took an early lead, plating four runs through the first three innings.
Fresno State scored its solo run in the fifth inning. Emery Nielson hit a leadoff single to center field and Alyssa Orr followed with another single to put two runners on base for the 'Dogs. Kacey Hvitved grounded out to the third baseman, bringing Nielson across home plate. The UC Davis' defense kept Fresno State to one run, stranding two.
The Aggies added one three runs in the seventh inning to take the series opener 7-1.
GAME 2
The Aggies scored three runs in the opening frame off four hits. The Bulldogs responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Mattson hit a one-out triple down the left-field line to get the offense going. Hvitved brought her home with a single up the middle. Vanessa M. Hernandez followed with a drawn walk to put two on base. Back-to-back errors by the Aggies' pitcher would score three more runs for the 'Dogs. Â
UC Davis tied the game in the third with one run on one hit. In the bottom of the third, back-to-back singles from Bailey Williams and Mackenna Steele put two on base and an error from the Aggies' shortstop would load the bases without any outs. UC Davis responded with two consecutive fielder's choices getting the lead runner out at home plate. Fresno State plated its first run of the inning off a wild pitch, and a two-RBI double from Mattson would make it a three-run inning to retake the lead. Â
The Aggies scored one run in the next frame off one hit. Still holding a 7-4 lead, Hernandez drew a leadoff walk and Alesia Denby followed with a single to left field. Steele belted an RBI double to extend the lead. Denby and Steele both scored on the next play off a fielding error by the second baseman. Avery Lawley sent an RBI single up the middle to score the fourth run of the inning, giving the Bulldogs an 11-5 lead.
Fresno State held UC Davis scoreless through the final three innings to record its first win of the season.
QUOTABLESÂ
Head Coach Stacy May-Johnson on the win against UC Davis…
"It was a team win, and it was the most complete game that we've played this season. Danielle Lung had a great outing in the circle for us. We were able to get our bats going, we had a lot of different players step up and get hits. We are looking forward to the season finale tomorrow and finishing off the weekend on a strong note."
