'Dogs split final day of Judi Garman

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team split the final day of the 2022 Judi Garman Classic. The Bulldogs posted a 6-1 win over LMU before falling to Cal Poly 5-2, on Saturday.
Junior Alesia Denby led the 'Dogs at the plate. She went 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs. Senior Marley Hanlon recorded her first win in the circle, after pitching a complete game against the Lions with four strikeouts.
Game 1 vs. LMU – The 'Dogs struck first, after Alex Wright the first home run of the day to bring in two runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Fresno State made it a three-run game in the fourth. Wright got on base for the 'Dogs with a leadoff single, and Denby brought her across home plate with a double to the wall.
The 'Dogs kept the offensive spark going in the fifth with a solo home run from Vanessa Hernandez. Fresno State took a 4-0 lead into the final two innings.
LMU avoided a shutout with a leadoff home run to open the sixth inning, but the Bulldogs responded with a two-run home run from Denby.
The 'Dogs sent the Lions down in order in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.
Game 2 vs. Cal Poly – The Mustangs jumped out to a quick lead in the opening inning after a leadoff walk and a two-out home run plated two runs.
Denby belted a leadoff home run in the bottom of the third inning to cut the deficit in half. In the following frame, back-to-back hits from Cal Poly would extend its lead 3-1. Â
Fresno State made it a one-run game in the bottom of the fifth. Denby drew a leadoff walk and was brought across home plate by a sacrifice bunt.
Cal Poly tallied two insurance runs in the last inning with a two-run home run. The 'Dogs put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the frame but were unable to score any runs to complete the comeback win.
What's next – Fresno State will host UCF on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Margie Wright Diamond.
