'Dogs win series in extra innings

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team handed Utah State its first series loss of Mountain West play, outlasting the Aggies 4-3 in extra innings at Margie Wright Diamond on Sunday afternoon.

The Bulldogs improve to 4-8 in conference play with their second series win. Sophomores Keahilele Mattson and Bailey Williams logged two hits apiece in the contest. Williams added a team-high two RBIs. Casey Dixon and Cassidy West split time in the circle, each pitching 4.0 innings. Dixon dished a season-high six strikeouts, and West recorded her fifth win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Dixon sent down the Aggies in order, two of them by strikeout, to start the contest. Mattson got the offense started with a two-out double to right field, followed by a fielding error on the next at-bat that put runners on the corners. Williams chalked her first RBI of the day with a single to second base, giving the 'Dogs an early 1-0 lead.

Utah State knotted the game at one run in the top of the fifth inning. The Aggies had two runners on base after a hit-by-pitch and a drawn walk. The run was brought in with a single to center field.

The Aggies took a 2-1 lead in the next inning with a solo shot over the left-field wall. The 'Dogs rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the frame. Alesia Denby drew a two-out walk and Williams drove her in with a triple to right field.

Neither team was able to plate a run in the seventh inning, sending the game into extra innings.

Utah State retook the lead in the top of the eighth with a two-out RBI single to left field. Mattson responded with a leadoff single in the bottom of the inning, followed by an attempted sacrifice bunt combined with a throwing error that would tie the game. The 'Dogs drew back-to-back walks to load the bases without an out. Taryn Irigoyen reached base on a throwing error and the game-winning run crossed home plate.

Fresno State earned its second extra-innings win of the season. The Bulldogs have won five out of their last seven games, including two MW series wins.

Fresno State will continue conference play on the road against New Mexico April 14-16.
