ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Fresno State softball team defeated New Mexico 7-6 in extra innings, on Friday night at the Lobo Softball Field.
The Bulldogs (12-28, 5-8 MW) outhit the Lobos 10-6. Keahilele Mattson, Emery Nielson and Bailey Williams all recorded two hits for Fresno State. Mattson and Williams both logged two RBIs apiece.
Right-handed pitcher Cassidy West earned her sixth win of the season after logging 5.0 innings and seven strikeouts in the circle.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs opened scoring in the second inning with one run after a leadoff walk and a hit by pitch put two runners on base for Abby Doughty. Doughty sent a RBI single to left field for an early lead over the Lobos.
New Mexico answered back in the next inning with a two-run home run to take a 2-1 lead after three.
Fresno State put up a four-run inning in the fourth. Taryn Irigoyen started off the inning with a single, but back-to-back fielder's choice plays would leave a runner on first with two outs. The 'Dogs rallied with back-to-back walks to load the bases for Mattson. The left fielder drove the ball up the middle for a two-RBI single. The two-out rally continued with a two-RBI single from Williams.
The Lobos knotted the contest with another two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The next two innings were scoreless, sending the game into extra innings.
Alyssa Orr drew a walk to start the eighth inning, and she moved to second with a sacrifice bunt from Nielson. New Mexico intentionally walked Mattson, putting two runners on base. After a groundout on the next pitch, the 'Dogs needed another two-out rally. Alesia Denby delivered with a two-RBI double off the left-field wall.
Fresno State took a two-run advantage into the bottom of the inning. New Mexico recorded its fourth home run with a solo shot to cut the Bulldogs' lead in half. The Lobos tried to extend the inning with a two-out single, but West dished her seventh strikeout of the evening to secure the win.
Fresno State has won five out of its last six conference games.
