'Dogs shutout Mustangs, 2-0

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team snapped Cal Poly's eight-game winning streak, defeating the Mustangs 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Janssen Field.
The Bulldogs (13-30, 5-10 MW) posted their second shutout of the season. Right-handed pitcher Casey Dixon chalked the start in the circle. Dixon threw 3.0 scoreless innings and only gave up one hit to the Mustangs. Fellow right-hander Cassidy West came in relief to start the fourth inning. West finished the game with five strikeouts to record her seventh win of the season.
Fresno State tallied five hits on the afternoon. Keahilele Mattson and Alesia Denby recorded one hit and one RBI apiece to lead the offense.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
Cal Poly retired the first nine Fresno State batters before the Bulldogs' offense was able to breakthrough. Alyssa Orr opened the fourth inning with a single to center field, and she utilized her speed to steal her fifth base of the season to move into scoring position. Emery Nielson laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Orr to third. Mattson plated the first run of the contest with an RBI single down the left-field line.
The Mustangs threatened the Bulldogs' one-run lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, after getting two runners with back-to-back two-out singles. West dished a big strikeout to get the 'Dogs out of the inning.
Fresno State extended its lead in the next inning with a two-out rally. Mattson drew a walk for the 'Dogs and Denby followed with a hard-hit double over the head of the right fielder to score Mattson for a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the frame, Cal Poly had two runners on without an out. West and the defense retired the next three batters to take the two-run lead into the final inning.
The Mustangs logged one hit in the bottom of the seventh, but a groundout and two strikeouts would strand the runner.
WHAT'S NEXTÂ
Fresno State will jump back into Mountain West play this weekend, hosting Colorado State April 22-24 at Margie Wright Diamond.
